Not genuinely a VOLTAGE converter

The description of this product (Jensen 1600 Watt Power Converter Kit JEN1600) is in regards to as believeable as any election crusade promise. First of all, it falsely claimed that this product “Converts voltage (220/240V AC) to U.S. voltage (110/120V AC)”. Secondly, it failed to mention that you may only use this product for simple HEATING widgets from 500-1600W, and never for any electronic appliances.
To in truth convert a 220V sinusoidal waveform into a 110V sinusoidal waveform, you need to use an AC transformer. This product, on the other hand, uses a solid-state switch inside to ‘chop off’ portion of the 220V sinusoidal waveform. This is precisely how an incandescent lamp dimmer works. The resulted waveform, however, is highly distorted and is far from a 110V sinusoidal voltage.
Most simple HEATING appliances (such as travel iron or hair dryer) work just fine irrespective of distorted voltage waveform. Therefore you may safely employed them with this POWER converter. But if you ever undertake to plug in an electronic appliance (such as DVD player, computer or microwave oven), then either the converter or the appliance could be fried in an instant!
My counsel is to stay away from this potentially damaging product. If you must fetch electronic widgets with your oversea trips, make sure they are rated for universal voltage of 100-240V AC. That way, you may safely use them in other countries without the need for a volatge converter. All you need is a set of universal plug adapters.
Power furnishes for most portable electronics (laptop, camcorder, cell-phone, electric shavers, etc.) are already designed for universal voltage, altho numerous of them may require you to physically flip a voltage-selection switch. Check the user manual or the AC input plug of your appliance to make sure.

Careful if buying this

The description does not make it clear that this ONLY works for ‘heating’ applicances amidst 500 and 1600 watts. You CANNOT use this for computers, lower-wattage devices, etc.
I just received it and I’m going to return it, as I can’t use this for phones, etc. with which I travel.

Doesn’t work

I was very disappointed when I got to South America and went to curl my hair and not one thing happened. Take a look at the product specifications. It has fixed use for widgets amidst 500 and 1600 watts. I had two dissimilar curling irons with me – one was ranked 85 watts and the other 125 watts. I am not sure what appliances this converter was designed for. Take my recommendation. Buy the converter by Tumi instead. It is twice the price, but it is one piece, easy to travel, and works with a great deal of dissimilar types of appliances. I am very satisfied with it.
