More productivity with less misunderstanding is a universal challenge in the workplace. Learning to commune with all communicating styles is the key to fostering cooperation, respect and understanding. Imagine how much more you could get done if everyone just got along!

Don’t get me wrong I’m not proposing agreement at each turn. Healthy conflict formulates ideas and solutions that would improbable be generated without divergent thoughts. What I am referring to is the enormous waste of time and energy expended correcting miscommunications that occur on a routine basis. Misinterpretations that could be averted with better communication skills.

Here’s How You Can Communicate to Promote Cooperation and Get More Done:

Develop a keen understanding of the four basic communication styles.

I call them the Governor, the Methodical, the Agreeable and the Expansive. You may know them by other titles.

Respect the theme or driving principle for each style.

Governors want to do things his or her way and with acceleration. Methodicals focus on accuracy at all costs.

Agreeables prefer consensus before taking action. And, Expansives favor fun while getting things done.

Shift your style of communication to meet theirs if you want to be heard.

A momentary shift in pace, eye contact and ebullience level goes a long way in making a connection. For Governors, square up your body, move with a determined step and speak quickly. With Methodicals, shift down a bit, control emotions and body language. Agreeables like eye contact and an easy going, amiable approach. Expansives will listen if you’re positive, spontaneous and energized.

To request action, provide or gather selective information and keep out of the way of misunderstandings commune according to each styles preferent approach to work.

Governors want the bottom line so keep out of the way of wordiness and explanations. If they are not in charge give them something to be in charge of. Methodicals want the entire comprehensible statement of the process. Spare no detail and be logical in your justification. This is no time to shoot from the hip or randomly speak your thoughts. The written word goes a long way towards getting results with this thinking style type. Agreeables will work hard, gather a cooperating team and give rise to quality results if you stay flexible and establish a kinship first. Taking a personal interest in their sensations produces trust and collaboration. Approach Expansives with a fun attitude, refrain from elaborate explanations and you’ll get the results and joint operation you seek.

Finally, support each style type to get over their limitations.

The risk-taking Governor may miss critical details due to impatience. Practicing due diligence and pointing out necessary elements will aid Governors from making wrong conclusions and charging in front towards the wrong goal. Help Methodicals by supplying and getting agreement to checkpoints and deadlines. Agreeables work best when their team is in accord. Speak to co-workers first, if possible. Or, let them recognise it is okay to move in front even if every one isn’t in agreement. Help Expansives control their environs from getting a distraction. Support their ideas while keeping them focalized on the rewards of reaching goals.

Listening and communicating by style types saves time, prevents misunderstandings and cultivates a cooperative workplace.
