Let’s face it, we’ve all experienced the crushing disappointment that comes with running out of juice on your iPod half way through that 10 minute techno-epic from Underworld, or of a sudden facing a wall of silence from your mobile as your best friend is half way through telling precisely what happened on THAT night. Or perhaps you’re witnessing a dramatic encounter amid a bird-eating spider and spider-eating bird and your camera battery has given up the ghost.
But hang on – what if you could charge up all your appliances on the move without having to rely on car chargers, batteries or “borrowed” sockets (come on, who hasn’t plugged their mobile phone charger into the socket in the corner table in Pizza Express Baker St while enjoying their American Hot). What if you could use a single portable power source to fuel your mobile phone, iPod (or other MP3 player if you haven’t succumbed to Apple-related peer pressure), BlackBerry, PDA, digital camera, portable games solace and all the other necessary gadgets that are presently weighing you down?
While the idea of being competent to recharge on the move is one of those inevitable late night topics of conversations to rank alongside other such rudimentary questions of our time like whether the iPhone is all it’s cracked up to be, whether Battlestar Galactica is actually still any good and whether Paris Hilton is hot or not, until not long back it was an academic issue with gadget freaks forced to stay within ten minutes of a power socket at all times or face the nervous breakdown-inducing possibleness of a battery warning.
No longer! Wipe the tears of joy from your eyes as you prepare to witness the amazing er… power, of… The Power Monkey! This little state-of-the-art piece of simian wizardry is, if not in truth the Holy Grail, surely something close to a miracle for those of us whose lives veer close to psychological and physical meltdown whenever the power runs dry.
The Power Monkey Explorer Travel Charger provides back up power from two power sources, one is a universal mains charger (suitable for UK, US, Australia and Europe) and the other – and this is the tasty bit – is a 110 x 70 x 10mm solar-slave which you may stick anyplace the sun does shine and charge up for free. It’s built for rugged use and is water resistant, so it won’t mind the odd shower (although you’ll want to stay clear from taking it under water, for evident reasons). It’s compatible with the immense majority of mobile phones from the main makers and includes USB connections to power up digital devices.
The Power Monkey gives you when it comes to 40 hours extra on an iPod, close to 100 hours on a mobile phone and around 1600 extra pictures on a digi camera (although it doesn’t charge cameras it just provides power). While it’s not a unlimited power source, it’s surely the nearest thing you may get while you’re on the move until someone in truth does find the Holy Grail.

This is all you need on gadgets rated for 110-240V AC By A. Dent This is all you need for any one device to the extent that it is ranked for universal voltage of 100-240V AC.
Most existent laptops and other electronics are this way these days but a good deal of older gimmicks may come with a 110/240V switch so make sure that you check before you plug your device into the alien outlet, exceptionally if you do it into the outlet of ‘higher’ voltage.
On this adapter’s features:
- Works as a plug converter on both sides, meaning that you may plug in either a US, Euro or South American device on one end and the outlet you plug it into may be either of the above. - Supports both 2-prong and 3-prong US plugs. - It is NOT a voltage converter. If your device is not rated for 240V prospects are it WILL be destroyed so be careful. - Amazingly, for the price, it even offers a good deal of surge protection.

Used in Hong Kong / China By Adam L. Gunder I purchased this converter to use with my laptop and cell phone / video camera charging. The converter itself is easy to use. It worked very well in Hong Kong because they use British style plugs. China uses the Australian type plugs. When using these plugs there is no third plug. Some circuits at upscale hotels will only work if 3 prongs are used, not just 2. When two prongs are applied either in the Australian plug or the European plug, the connection is very flimsy and falls out of the socket easily. I did not have to use this much in China as the hotel I was staying at (a Mariott hotel) had various choices on the wall plate that permitted me to use American plugs.
Regaring power transformers: Most of Asia uses 220 – 240 Volt circuits. If all you are using are laptops and cell phone / camera charging cords, most of those will tolerate up to 240 volts. Just check the sqaure/rectangular box attached to the cord to see how much voltage it will take. If you are using hair dryer / curling iron / electric razor / etc., you will need a power transformer as these appliances quintessentially will not take voltage over 110 (used in America for most things).

Look no further By DrDre I have had a good deal of an adapter. This is my basi all-in-one. It performed flawlessly in the UK and Portugal, and will have to work everywhere. The great thing regarding it is that it also has reverse compatibility so that for example, a house guest from Europe could use this in your house in the US. Brilliant device!
