Atlanta is Georgia’s State Capital which has a big amount of historical significance in itself. Built in the late 1880′s the state capital building was Atlanta’s firstborn City Hall. The city later donated the building to the state in order to become the Capital. The reconstruction of the South led to the industrialization of Atlanta and at last led the southern city into unimagined prominence.

The Sweet Auburn Historic District marks the African American neighborhood along Auburn Avenue that quickly became known as the “richest Negro street in the World”. Shortly after the end of the Civil War galore businesses, congregations and social organizations sprouted up all around this area. In 1865 the Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was built and marked the beginning of the growth of African American influence in the area.

One of Atlanta’s great ‘rags to riches’ stories is that of Alonzo Franklin Herndon. Now a preserved landmark, the Herndon Home was the mansion in which he lived. Herndon was born into slavery but after being freed went on to become Atlanta’s basi African American millionaire by founding the Atlanta Life Insurance Company around 1910. Herndon speedily became a well known figure of the Sweet Auburn District.

Herndon isn’t the only person of outstanding signification to come out of the Sweet Auburn District. Martin Luther King Jr. was born and raised in the area. Now, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site encompasses the primary Ebenezer Baptist Church that he and his father preached at, his boyhood home, the his gravesite and the innovative Ebenezer Baptist Church resplendent with floor-to-ceiling windows and simple elegance that is synonymous with the New South. Also known as the Fabulous Fox it is recognized as one of the grand movie palaces built in the United States for the duration of the Golden Age of Cinema (mid 1920′s to early 1930′s). Located just one block away from the North Avenue MARTA Station, this theaters’ Eastern-influenced Moorish design distinguishes it from any other theater in the country, due to the fact that it was in the first place intended to be the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque. When the Shriners ran out of cash William Fox took over the project and turned it into the glorious movie palace it is today.

Not too far from the Fox is another interesting historic location. The Dixie Bottling Plant and company headquarters was located in Atlanta. The company was founded in 1900 and for the duration of that time Atlanta’s industrial city strength permitted the company to transition from a soda served in Atlanta to a mass-marketed bottled soft drink to the rest of the country. The present-day Coke company has upgraded to a progressed bottling facility and still maintains a corporate presence in downtown Atlanta. Tours of both the new factory and a the historical plant are sure to intrigue soda drinkers and history buffs alike.
