Christopher Wormell’s magnificent, color-drenched linoleum-block illustrations grace this alphabet book, so handsomely designed it’s sure to appeal to discriminating adults as well as to children. The award-winning British artist, whose former work An Alphabet of Animals took the top graphics prize at the 1990 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, has developed all new art for his latest interpretation of the alphabet, featuring glorious images of animals from armadillo to zorilla (a skunklike creature).

From Publishers WeeklyWormell, whose firstborn book, An Alphabet of Animals, was published in 1990 and captured the Bologna Graphics Prize, once again sets his abecedary detached from the herd through sheer strength of artistry. Though the conception is a intimate one each turn of the page reveals a letter (both capital and lowercase) and a corresponding animal, from the Southwestern Armadillo to the African Zorilla (a skunk-like creature) the arrestingly gorgeous wood engravings lift the book to a lofty level. Clean, sharp lines and a simplicity of composition that borders on stark define each illustration, while the animals themselves are strikingly iconic. Outlined in thick, dark strokes accented with finelooking washes of color, each is placed in a setting that, with just a few telling details, proposes it is natural habitat. An owl perches on a branch, for instance, versus a serrated edge of trees lit up by a lilac night sky; the less intimate ibex (a mountain goat) stands versus snowy peaks. A gifted colorist, Wormell brings about hues that melt from one shade to another like a cloudless sunset. All ages.

5Great Animal Alphabet
By Bethany
What a fantastic A-Z book. There are a heap of of this type around but this is amidst the best I’ve found. First of all, the aweinspiring illustrations are bold, colorful and contemporary. The layout is superb pairing a simple, big letter pair (upper and lower case) with the name of the animal in a somewhat littler font on the one side with the animal counterpart on the next. Some of the featured animals are mutual (horse, sheep, lion, etc.) and a heap of are more obscure(uakari, zorilla)but a guide to the less intimate is offered at the back. It is a bit heavy on the birds (9 letters are devoted to our feathered friends) but this complaint is very minor given the quality and instructional value of this book. Most unquestionably recommended.

5Cute and small

This is a very cute book. I like that they have dissimilar and distinctive animals representing the letters. I thought this book was bigger, but it is a outstanding size for my three year old and six month old.

Our daughter is obsessed with this book! The binding is kind of crappy and fell apart quickly, so we had it spiral bound. This was a suitable investment, as our kid can’t get sufficient of this book.
