CB Radios are regrettably fixed to 4 watts of output power by the FCC (Federal Commissions Commission). Most specifically, this is known as radio frequency output. This restriction has been placed, because CB Radios operate on 27MHZ frequency which the FCC mandates as a license free 11 meter Citizens Band. Due to the standard public having access, in addition to fixed frequencies (or “channels”); congestion and interference are always concerns.

Many new to the sparetime activity or the operation thereof, assume illegally modifying their CB Radio (known by the term “Peak and Tune”) for higher output, or worse yet, running a high output illegal amplifier are the only ways they may improve the performance and range of their CB Radios.

This is actually untrue, and in all honesty, antenna types and setup play a much more prominent and influential role in the range of CB Radios, or most types of wireless communications for that matter. This is because, in terms of operating efficiency, the match of the antenna, type of antenna and gain there of, and antenna height are all more significant to radio performance, are by far more critical to radio range, than any other aspect in regards to the hobby. Thankfully, the FCC provides much more freedom, with what may be done and/or bettered upon, in regards to CB Antennas! As you may see from the premise of the introductory few paragraphs, the recommendations on bettering the range of a CB Radio legally will be affiliated to antenna setup:

1. Antenna Mounting Height – Nothing is more important, then concede the antenna to capture greatest or most complete or best possible signal, than placing the antenna in the most eminent position as possible. If running a base station setup, placing the antenna on the peak of a roof, or a good sized tower, that is above nearby terrain and buildings are key here. If running mobile, placing the antenna on the most eminent place on the car, where the antenna may be both securely grounded and mounted is ideal.

For mobile antennas, in general 8′ 6″ and for base antennas 22′ 6″ are the idealisti vertical sizes for greatest or most complete or best possible performance!

3. Antenna Type – Just as anything else, not all antennas are devised equal, in terms of actual gain. Higher gain antennas do exist, and by the nature of their design, not only do they focus their pattern in a desired direction, they also pick up less noise from undesirable sources/directions. Some of the higher gain antennas include the Yagi and Quad antenna types, and they may range anyplace from 2-16 antenna constituents lined up in pattern! These antennas may efficaciously intensify your CB Radios signal 10 times or more!

4. Ground, Ground, and more Ground! – Electrically grounding a mobile antenna is critical, as the antennas are dependent upon a return path, and needs a big ground plane or” counterpoise” to do this both efficaciously and efficiently. This is likewise critical for most base antennas, it’s just due to less size constraints, and this may be done with either an “Elevated Ground Plane Kit” or with usual “ground radials”.

5. Tune Your Antenna! – If this wasn’t enough, you will have to also tune and verify a proper turn of your antenna. This involves using an precise SWR meter, or better yet an Antenna Analyzer, to make sure the antenna is tuned for a frequent 50 ohm match. This is reflected by the SWR – Standing Wave Radio measurement. The idealisti reading is a 1:1, meaning for each watt of power that is transmitted by a CB Radio, 100% of it is being radiated forward, with no detectable amount being reflected back due to an improper antenna match. Having a perfective reading may not always be possible; notwithstanding any reading beyond 2:1 may in a literal sense harm your radio, so always check, tune, and verify your antenna!

Great little basic CB!
So, you’re sitting there looking at this page in your browser, perhaps with a look of doubt in your face. That’s why you’ve scrolled down here to the reviews. You’re thinking to yourself “A $30 CB? It can’t be worth a flip, right?”. I tell ya what, I was thinking the same thing. But I gave it a shot and installed it in my wife’s little ’97 Corolla a few days ago, and so far I’ve been pretty impressed.

Great Bang For The Buck!
I purchased this radio new on Amazon for in regards to 26 bucks delivered; not a bad price for any CB that is in working order, new or used! So there is value here! The introductory radio I received was defective; the receive division wholly lost it’s sensitivity after a few minutes of turning the radio on, and it was without apparent effort substituted with a totally functioning one. As one who enjoys “big” rig equipment, the compact size in this case permitted me to install it within the space beneath a removable tray in my car. Using a good quality extension speaker did the trick; but the radio has breathtakingly good audio quality and volume from it is internal speaker. An added bonus that NONE of the sellers; even the manufacturer ever mentions is that this rig does have an RF Gain control, a feature NEVER seen in a radio at this price point. Another thing I am impressed with is the fact that the squelch control in truth works properly; set it for a peculiar threshold, and it will concede signals to pass selectively based on the FULL range of differently received signal strengths. It seems that the radio has a heap of sort of “fuzzy logic” that allows a signal to break the squelch and stay received even as the signal fluctuates under the chosen threshold to a good deal of degree. Most squelch circuits, even in high priced equipment, operate miserably in this regard. So with the other features staged with this radio, ease of operation, good TX & RX audio, the nice size package, and the price – you merely can’t go wrong!

Outstanding radio
I have been into CB radios since they primary came out. I also have 50 year experience as a ham radio operator and an electrical engineer. I have never had a better CB radio. I purchased a second one just to have in years to come as a spare. I use it each day-it has very low crosstalk from high power CB transmitters nearby on the Interstate.
Can’t beat it for the $
