 Fun, Topical Reading

This is one of those books you may pick up and read random chapters, or even person pages and find value. The book is organized topically and covers a wide assortment of interests, so whether your interest is RTTY, DX, moonbounce, or whatever, you’ll likely find it covered here – not just in shoal survey form, either (in spite of it is wide coverage), but with usable counsel and perspective. I think this is one of ARRL’s better titles, along with their license manuals and the Antenna Book. Highly commended for the newer ham or experienced ham curious with regards to unfamiliar operating modes.

 Good for newcomers

Good book for newcomers to novice radio. It has a good deal of tables and figures that are helpful/required for operation, though just with regards to all of them may be found online somewhere. The basi couple chapters deal with the aim of HAM radio and etiquette (operating procedure, band plans, etc). This is helpful for those who are getting ready to transmit, but don’t in truth recognise what to do when they do transmit. The majority of the book explains some of the activenesses possible in HAM radio (DX, QRP, mobile, etc). The final chapter talks in regards to the regulatory side of things, including the FCC, ITU, does/don’t, etc. There is hardly any technical info (ie types of antennas, how to build a tuner, etc), The ARRL Handbook does this.

Good Overview

I employed the book to aid orient me after I finished my General license. Helped me understand numerous operating areas and specialnesses within ham radio. Not much depth on any topic, but sufficient to get you started. Highly recommended.
