There is just about no place I can go on my property that there isn’t one within reach somewhere. Six different brands are represented presently by what I own, including a more expensive Eton that is not my best radio. This small, (and I mean small) new line from Eton is a whole new animal to be sure. Its controls and design are very user friendly. And the reception on all channels, including the weather, is very loud and clear. Its true that the dial numbers for the AM FM are very small as some other reviewers have mentioned and can make it hard to tune accurately. But that is something common, as well as for me expected in a radio so small. What sets this unit apart from all the others I own in my opinion is its price and solar power. It is without a doubt the cheapest weather radio I have come across that is solar powered. Big, small, or otherwise. Even though one has been able to buy solar powered calculators at discount stores for less than $10 for years now, for some reason the weather radio industry has treated solar power as something still high tech and to be appreciated only in their most expensive units. My only other solar powered radio cost me over $60. The only possible down side that I should mention about this radio is that it does not take batteries. It would have been nice if they included that option. But they didn’t and its either the solar power or crank. This could be a very big negative for some folks who would feel comfortable knowing they could just stick some batteries in it if all else fails. Although 90% of the time the solar power is all you should ever need, if you will routinely keep this in a rather dark place, or happen to be lost out in the savage wilderness someplace with this radio in a continuous cloud cover, be ready to do a whole heap of crankin’. All in all, its finally nice to see a very reasonably priced unit that is solar powered and of a very quality build and design as well. I highly recommend the Eton for a portable unit that can be taken anywhere easily, powered effortlessly, and gives quality performance all in one package….

No, it is not a top-end emergency radio, but it should work rather well for anyone looking for a basic AM/FM/Weather radio with both a solar and hand-crank charging option. I purchased mine about a year ago and used it only occasionally for the first few months. Then I placed it on a shelf with limited light and there it sat for about six to eight months. About six weeks ago I dusted it off and it actually worked for about an hour or so with no hand-crank charging. Later that day I sat it in the front window where it would get plenty of direct sun light. A couple days later I picked it up from the window and have been using it a few hours each day since; some of those days it was used for more than six hours in the basement. I have not needed to crank it at all, but did crank charge it for about one minute total just while playing with it – for the record. Since then, I have been keeping it on the shelf out in the open where it is exposed to normal room daylight, no direct sunlight. The charging light does not light up in this setting, and I would not expect it to. I have occasionally taken it out on the front porch to sit a listen where there is direct sunlight, but only for about an hour or so each week. I really like the idea of not having to buy batteries, and the convenience of knowing I always have a charged radio.

The flashlight is minimal, but I would not expect more from an LED light source. I have my 6-D-Cell Mag light if I need a powerful (luxury) light source.

Tuning the radio is a bit sensitive and can be difficult to fine tune. I would consider this to be a SIGNIFICANT problem for an elderly person or anyone without the use of fine motor skills in their hands; but for me it is a minor hassle I am willing and able to deal with. I have considered getting the Eaton FR600 for its digital tuner. The reviews for that model suggest the battery life is pretty bad, so I have decided to wait for an improved model. For now, my FR160 is just fine. I would consider giving this 5-stars if the fine-tuning was much easier.

The USB charge does work, but know that it will not charge an iPhone 3Gs. This is more a problem/restriction of the iPhone 3Gs (a widely discussed complaint across the Internet for many-many generic charging devices) and is not because of the radio. Charging my old Samsung phone was not a problem.

The weather bands do pick up a signal, but to be absolutely honest, I have not used it much to provide any real opinion.

The hand-crank charger feels solid enough (I wouldn’t abuse it) and tucks away securely when not used. I have found the manual crank-charger will provide about 25-30 minutes of radio time (at about 1/4 to 1/3 volume) for every minute of crank-charging. I average about 2 cranks per second or about 120 rotation per minute. Now I just count to 120 or so instead of watching the clock. This play-time per craink-time yeild has been very acceptable for me. After two minutes of crank-charging my hand does begins to tire a little, but just a little. If I leave the radio in a place with good direct sunlight when not using it, changing via the crank is never even needed.

In short, it works for what I want – a radio that that can be charged by sunlight or by hand-crank when absolutely necessary. If you want the construction and feature-set of a $100+ radio – buy a $100+ radio. But, for $30 (or less), I am pleased with the FR160.

Drevo, Jr.
The reasons this Eton-manufactured emergency radio is the ideal emergency radio are: 1) small, compact size, 2) shock-absorbing case, 3) sensitive AM/FM/NOAA Weather tuner picks up weak signals, 4) handy 3-LED flashlight on left-hand end of the radio’s case, 5) Earphone jack under dust cover on the right-hand side of the case, 6) USB port under same dust cover on the right-hand side of the case, 7) All radio bands will run 4-5 hours at low volume on full charge of the internal NiMH battery, Solar panel on top of the radio’s case is strong enough to power the radio indefinitely (as long as the solar panel is ‘seeing’ daylight), 9) the internal NiMH can be re-charged via the solar panel during daylight hours, an external transformer or the hand-cranked dynamo. You get all of these features for the low price of $30, plus free ‘Super Saver’ shipping from Amazon.Com. You can pay a lot more for an emergency radio and get a whole lot less!

The firstborn thing users will see when logging into SP2, the newly bettered Windows® XP operating system, is a new Security Center informing them of the status of critical security features, such as the firewall, antivirus updates, and automatic updates. Following is a brief look at the major improvements in XP security found within SP2.

Network Protection:

Microsoft has renamed the former Internet Connection Firewall to Windows Firewall. The newly named firewall is now turned on by default, with ports closed except when they are in use, an bettered user interface for configuration, bettered application compatibility, and heightened administration through group policy settings which concede discerned policies to be specified for firewall configuration. Inbound connections may be restricted based on their origin, and remote routine call (RPC) vulnerability is mainly scaled down through SP2′s insistence upon secure RPC connections. DCOM also has further and added access control limitations to protect versus network attacks.

Memory Protection:

Some attacks exploit vulnerabilities that grant too much selective information to be copied into areas of the computer’s memory (buffer overflow). To mitigate this vulnerability, core Windows elements have been recompiled with shelter versus buffer overruns. Microsoft has also teamed up with Intel and AMD to employ hardware-based shelter versus the buffer overflow vulnerability. Using this data execution preventative action (DEP) mechanism in the processor, the CPU marks all memory locatings in an application as non-executable unless they comprise executable code. Thus, when a virus or worm inserts malicious code into an application, the application won’t run it.

Email Handling and Web Browsing:

Many of the more prevalent security breaches have emerged from email, messaging applications, and web browsing. SP2 targets these vulnerabilities through intensified security default settings and bettered attachment control using the Attachment Execution Service (AES) API. SP2 likewise protects versus malicious Active X controls and code by “locking down” the Local Machine security zone much the same way it protects web pages through security zones set within the Internet Options of Internet Explorer. Active X controls can’t run in the local machine zone unless the user gives permission. The same is unfeigned of JavaScripts and binary code. Scripts are likewise prevented from elevating the security zone to a less restrictive setting.

MIME types are handled more safely by renaming files to match their unfeigned types before placing them in the cache. SP2 likewise tightens up access to cached objects by blocking access when navigating away from the page that loaded the object. Finally, SP2 has added a pop-up blocker within the Privacy tab of IE’s Internet Options. Users are notified when pop-ups are encountered, and they may choose to view the pop-ups they want to see. Restrictions are also placed on the size, format, and placement of pop-ups, preventing borderless windows which might cover other pages.

Other Features:

With SP2 Microsoft has added a great deal of new features to aid manage the configuration and updating of systems. A new Manage Add-ons feature helps in managing Active X controls and other IE extensions. This feature lists add-ons that have been loaded, their status, source, and the validity of their digital signatures. Add-ons may be disabled, and a history of usage is available.

A new mechanism has been added for handling and analyzing add-on crashes. Downloading files is now more secure too. Users are cautioned not only when they download files, but likewise when they open downloaded files after they have been saved locally. Files extracted from downloaded zipped files also generate the same warning. Finally, SP2 differentiates amongst Java virtual machines (JVMs) in general and the Microsoft JVM, permitting users to disable the Microsoft JVM without disabling others.

Availability:

A final release version of SP2 was made available August 9thand is almost 270MB. Microsoft is making it available on the Internet by way of a broadband connection. The new Windows Update 5.0 includes a “Checkpoint Restart” feature, permitting resumption of a download when the Internet connection is interrupted.

SP2 may be downloaded in the background and will take in regards to 40% of the available bandwidth. For those who have turned on the auto-update feature of Windows, SP2 will download without the user’s knowledge, and Windows Update will not duplicate any download that the automatic update has already installed. For those without broadband connections, Microsoft is supplying a free CD by way of the mail.

SP2 may be installed using a few dissimilar methods. If the computer is already running Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional, the standalone version of SP2 may be installed separately as an update. For those wanting to upgrade the operating scheme as well as install SP2, the operating scheme and service pack may be installed simultaneously.

Potential Issues:

SP2 is surely good news for organizations and the schemes administrators who help them. However, there are some issues to be conscious of. Most remarkable amongst the potential troubles are those caused by the new default firewall. Because the firewall restricts access to ports, galore apps may be restricted in ways which will require firewall configuration.

Laptop users pose particular difficulties for operating scheme firewalls, as they require dissimilar configurations based upon whether users are behind or outside of the corporate firewall. In such cases discerned profiles will need to be used-the Domain Profile for those behind the corporate firewall, and the Mobile Profile for those beyond the domain controller. The Network Location Awareness tool will determine which to use at any given time. Organizations wanting to adopt SP2 without going through the at times discouraging and hindering task of configuration may turn off the firewall through a group security policy.

Despite the potential complications, however, SP2 is good news for security-minded IT professionals. Be sure to plan for it is deployment in your enterprise soon.

I’m really impressed with the video quality and the compact size. It was extremely easy to install and has a really great wide field of view. The night low-light performance is exceptional. It also has a nice feature where it has a ladder type grid superimposed on the video feed that allows you to estimate your range to an object behind you. This camera has my recommendation.

The “Inner Sanctum Mysteries” series, was an eerie old time radio showed that aired from 1947 until 1952. The program was an anthology of suspense and mystery shows. Himan Brown was the creator and producer. It aired on Sunday nights and told a potpourri of macabre stories with regards to lunatics, murders, gremlins, and ghosts.

The eerie sound of a creaking door with a background of organ music started and ended each show. The sound was in truth made by an old, squeaking desk chair. Lew White provided the creepy organ music.

It was hosted by Raymond Johnson who was known only as “Raymond”. His dark sense of humor set the tone for the eerie, terror filled stories of the show. His morbid puns and mocking humor was copied by a great deal of horror show hosts in the future.

Raymond ended each show with the phrase “Pleasant dreams, Hmmmm?” spoken in a long drawn out voice. In 1945 Johnson left the show and was substituted by Paul McGrath. He didn’t use the “Raymond” name but was known only as “Your Host”.

Each story in the anthology involved a mix of fear, horror, and humor. This made the show an strange and agreeably diverting mix of themes.

Episodes included Boris Karloff starring in, “The Tell-Tale Heart”. Karloff starred in over 15 sequences of the show. Many other guest stars appeared on the show including, Helen Hayes, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains and Orson Welles. Some of the regulars on the show who went on to success in television and movies were Burgess Meredith and Richard Widmark.

The show was sponsored by the Lipton Tea Company. Ironically, the spokeswoman was a cheery woman named Mary Bennett whose personality was the total opposite of the atmosphere of the series.
In the 1940s, Universal Studios devised a series of low budget movies based on the show and starring Lon Chaney, Jr. A television show was devised in 1954.

Only 200 of the 500 firstborn radio shows remain. You may take delight in the thrilling, suspense filled sequences of “The Inner Sanctum Mysteries” shows once again.

After a day of staring at your computer screen, listening to a relaxing, agreeably diverting radio show may be a terrifi break from staring at a television screen.

If you search for old time radio shows on the internet there are assorted internet sites that let you experience the excitement, or in the case of “Inner Sanctum Mysteries” the chilling thrills, of ordinary old time radio shows. When the door creaks open….you’ll know you’ve arrived at the “Inner Sanctum….”.

One of the employees at Target said he had used it in his car and could still over his engine and road noise. It is super light weight, obviously very portable and works with my Ipod and my Sirius Stilleto satelitte radio. My ears were getting sore from using earbuds all the time so I wanted to a portable speaker to use instead. The sound is good for the size of the speaker and the volume was much louder than I expected it to be. Great for using at my desk or while cooking in the kitchen and WAY better on your ears than headphones/buds.

Daniel Yavuzkurt
I actually got this system used from a thrift store for $5 (good deal!)… but it works great; it boosts the sound by maybe 20 decibels (it sounds ten times louder than my laptop speaker). Haven’t had batteries run out yet, but it doesn’t take well to rechargeables (NiMH); it drained my little AAAs in about an hour when I tried it with some half-charged ones. I’m currently testing it with freshly charged ones. When the battery gets low, the sound starts skipping until you lower the volume; there’s no ‘battery good / bad’ light.

It’s pretty cool, though, and actually has stereo speakers (though for some reason the stereo is reversed on mine; I just use it upside down). Definitely worth the $5 I paid; probably even worth $10-15.

Wilson
I bought this when I wanted to listen to music at work but couldn’t wear earbuds. My work environment is loud, but I could hear this over the noise if I stayed within 5 feet. It is much better for a quiet environment. The batteries last long and the sound is okay, too.

And, I have to admit, those three rotate pretty regularly based on individual episodes.

The characters all work really well together and the stellar “family” trio of David Krumholtz, Rob Morrow, and Judd Hirsch again work their magic in this well-written and well-acted third season. As much as this show is about the FBI or mathematics (and the great connection the two can have in common), it also is about family, in the literal sense but also in regards to people you work with. Ultimately, you care about these characters (especially if you have seen the other two seasons, but isn’t required) and the differences their jobs and their lives create between them. The subject matter is heavy at times (and not recommended for children) but some of the other “heavy” episodes aren’t anything they aren’t already exposed so could make this show fresh by its bringing mathematics away from just geeks and making it interesting for all kinds of people.

You use your laptop to check emails, work while traveling and to upload photos to part with your friends and family. If you want to take your laptop, netbook or other form of computer with you when you travel, what do you need to make sure that you may plug it in wherever you are? Let’s look at the necessaries for journeying with your laptop.

Simplest Solution for International Use

Many or most laptops already have a power cord and adapter that’s just in regards to ready for international use. This is the cable with the rectangular black box located someplace along it is length. Most of these cables may receive voltages from 100 to 240 volts, which will concede you to use electricity from gorgeous much anywhere.

The issue altho is you cannot plug it in at your destination because you will likely have a plug type (3 prong, etc) that won’t fit into those amusive little outlets in other countries. All you need is a simple adapter to grant the plug to fit into the country’s outlet type. Your power cord will take care of the rest and receive whatsoever voltage the outlet throws at you. You may stay plugged in or you may plug in just to charge up the batteries.

Laptop Chargers

If you have lost or broken your initial cable you may find universal chargers that fit a good deal of laptops. Ensure that the little round plug fits your laptop before you leave. Most come with an potpourri of connections. Also make sure that the voltage is rated for 110 to 240v. You’ll still need a plug adapter for your destination country, so the plug will physically fit into the wall outlet.

Universal laptop chargers oftentimes come with USB outlets which are handy for charging other portable devices.

Travel Adapter

This is a little converter which will give you 110 volts (or whatsoever your voltage is) like back home. They many times come with an potpourri of plugs to fit outlets in dissimilar areas of the world. Use this if you have a few dissimilar electronic items that need “home style” voltage.

It’s rather easy to take your laptop overseas. First check your current power cable for it is voltage rating, then make sure your plug will fit in to the outlet at your destination. That’s actually all there is to it! For each device you have, other than your laptop, check it is power cable and determine if you need to buy any other adapters or charging devices.

The Problem Stated – Paying Too Much for TV

When it comes to the present state of the faltering US economy, humans are eagerly looking for ways to make their hard earned cash go further. For a big portion of the US population, the initial step is to look at letting down any recurring on a monthly basis costs. Of the necessary services such as electricity, water, and gas utilities, there is ordinarily very little the buyer may do to make a significant affect on these costs. But when that cable or satellite bill comes in the mail, the original thing that comes to mind is: “Why am I paying so much? There must be a better way.” For most people, their ‘pay for TV’ bill is distinctively the most eminent per month expense they have other than credit cards, car payments, and the mortgage. To make matters worse, these remunerate TV prices are rising, with bills going up 3.5% or more per year.

A report freed by Centris in Q1 of 2009 showed the intermediate on a monthly basis cable bill in the U.S. to be $71. That’s a whopping $852 per year, not including any pay per view charges! For those who subscribe to cable or satellite and don’t watch much TV, the financial affect is even worse.

Knowledge Before Action – What Can Digital TV Do for You?

Many buyers are incognizant of the upcoming demise of analog broadcast TV on June 12, 2009. Equally astounding is that most persons don’t realize that the digital format TV (DTV) being broadcast today is not only wholly free, but offers a higher quality high definition picture than cable or satellite! The reason for this is the over the air digital format is sent uncompressed, while cable and satellite suppliers ought to compress the data to get their desired bandwidth to meet the number of channels they will have to support. Broadcast DTV likewise offers programming not available on remunerate TV. For instance, in addition to the frequent big local stations like CBS, NBC, ABC, there are a great deal of local channels available in both English, Spanish, and other languages. Also, since the broadcast format is digital, stations may multicast, or transmit multiple programs over the air. In the Los Angeles area, NBC (Channel 4) broadcasts 3 discerned channels 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4, the later two being 24 hour local weather and sports.

Most people have these images in their mind of when analog TV was the only thing available, and how the picture was snowy and ghosty, and what a pain it was adjusting those rabbit ears. Those days are now gone with the advent of broadcast DTV. The picture is sharper and clearer than ever before in high definition resolutions up to 1080i (1080 lines of vertical resolution, interlaced). That’s better than cable or satellite, who will charge you extra for their HD programming.

Another caveat to DTV is the fact that there is further and added selective information available in the transmission such as program schedule information, similar to your recompense TV provider. On most analog to digital converter boxes and HDTVs, a feature called Electronic Program Guide (EPG) on your remote control allows you to view program information, schedule times, title and genre…just like a TV guide.

What You Need to Get Broadcast Digital TV for Free

You may not realize it, but if you presently subscribe to a cable or satellite service, you a just steps away from getting broadcast TV, totally free. There are assorted components that will bestow to your success.

First, determine how your emplacement will affect your capacity to receive digital TV stations. Your expected values on picture quality and the number of stations you may receive may be heightened, only to find out that you live in a in general poor reception area. If you live in a valley, or other area with geographical or physical obstacles, your reception may not be ideal. Ask neighbors that have indoor or outdoor antennas how their reception is. Of course this has likewise to do with the type and quality of antenna they are using, but this feedback will give you an idea of what is accomplishable in your location. Valuable tools, antennaweb.org and antennapoint.com, help you to determine reception characteristics in you area. By entering your zip code, you may determine each stations distance, suggested antenna type, and aiming direction relative to your location. Also, TitanTV’s on-line TV guide allows you to enter your zip code to see what broadcast programming is available in your area, and it will also show you a program guide of show times and which shows are broadcast in HD, or high definition.

If your reception capability looks good, the next step is to pick the type of antenna that is best suitable for your situation. In a good reception area, an indoor antenna will work well in most cases, and there are assorted on the market that provide good performance for underneath $70. Indoor antennas install quickly and concede for easy adjustment to pick up most stations. It is highly commended that you get an amplified antenna for indoor use, since the added signal boost will help dramatically to pick up stations that you would not be capable to receive otherwise.

The other option is to use an outdoor antenna to get better reception. Outdoor antennas will optimally give you a line of sight unobstructed path to the broadcaster’s tower, and therefore, much better reception. If you are located in a poor reception area, this is in all likelihood the best solution for you. The cons to outdoor antennas are: a heap of householders associations do not grant them for aesthetic reasons, the installation is more elaborated (some requiring roof or attic installation and cable routing), unless you have a motorized version the direction of the antenna will be fixed and you may not be capable to receive all the stations in your area.

The next thing to address is the type of TV that you have. If you not long ago purchased a flat screen TV, whether LCD, plasma, or LED, you will most likely have a digital tuner that may be hooked directly to an external antenna. The key buzzword to look for is ‘ATSC’, which is a North American general for digital broadcast TV. All newer digital flat screen TVs are now required to help ATSC. All that is required to watch free TV off the air is to connect the cable from your new antenna to the input to your TV — where your current cable or satellite box hooks to. You plainly hook up the cable, go to your set up menu and select the signal input to be ‘Antenna’ rather of ‘Cable’, and get started the channel scan mode. The scan distinctively takes various minutes, but once it is done you may without delay commence looking at over the air (OTA) TV.

If you have an older analog TV, you will need to get a digital to analog converter box. These converters have the ATSC tuner inside which receives the digital format signal, and converts it to an analog signal that may be viewed on you older TV. Keep in mind that the picture quality will be fixed by your TVs resolution, which is quintessentially around 500 lines. Even so, you will receive a crisp, clear picture with none of the snow or ghosting effects of the old analog broadcasts.

7041 of 7155 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic device – pick your Kindle!
By FreeSpirit
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.

Introduction

Much info has been written when it comes to portable solar power. The same is unfeigned for the novice radio hobby. However, there is not much selective information available for the solar ham radio enthusiast. Understanding how to size instrumentation for a specific need is key to insuring the right instrumentation is placed into service. A central source is being developed to provide the ham radio operator with authorized info to make such purchasing decisions. Consider the gains of using substitute energy for camping, taking part in a DXpedition or when called in to participate in local emergencies.

The DXpedition

DXpeditions are very particular events kept by ham radio operators for the gain of ham radio operators around the globe. Ham radio operators plan out the DXpedition for months and then gather furnishes and equipment, apply for permits and alien licences necessary to operate in respective exotic and on occasion dangerous emplacements around the world. The central intention of the DXpedition is to concede fellow ham radio operators the prospect to win awards. Some ham radio operators wait for years to contact just one of these distinguishable locations. The reader ought to realize that galore of these locatings may be no more than a little knoll jutting out from the middle of the ocean.

The awards called DXCC are granted by the American Radio Relay League located in Newington Connecticut. After the proper documentation has been submitted and validated, ham radio operators receive the awards and proudly display them in their ham shacks. The ham shack is in general a room where the ham keeps his equipment, project workbench and displays badges, post cards called QSL cards, awards and other particular selective information gathered by his operating station over time.

As you might imagine, substitute energy may play a huge role in the case of the DXpedition. With today’s advances in solar technology, little flexible, waterproof panels may be rolled up and effortlessly stowed with the other gear to be transported to the emplacement of the DXpedition.

Portable panels do not generate sufficient power to run full-sized high frequency HF radios which are applied in long distance DX communications. However, there are galore apps for substitute energy. Running low power Handie Talkies, recharging cell phone batteries, running lights around the camp website are just a few of the uses for this aweinspiring technology. Jackets and other articles of costume have flexible solar cells integrated directly into the fabric.

Low Power QRP Operation

Low power operation called QRP is another perfective application for small., flexible solar panels. QRP is specified as operating a ham radio with 5 or less watts of output power. Think of communicating with humans using the same power that is emitted from a night-light bulb. Of course this form of communication is more challenging over long distances using high frequency (HF) radio equipment, but galore ham radio operators love a challenge. At one time a lot of years ago, I made a QRP contact (known as a QSO) using morse code (known as CW) with a station located in Hawaii. (My ham shack is located in New York).

High Power Operations

Using rigid solar panels in conjunction with a power regulator and one or more deep cycle marine battery may be employed to operate high frequency HF radios running up to 100 watts of output power. There are specific formulas used to determine how to size required solar panels and battery required for such operation. The Solar ham radio Web internetlocation holds formulas and other indispensable selective information with regards to applying substitute energy to radio operations.

(Another review here is not talking about this book – this book is the latest and will be good until mid-2011.) Just make sure you get the the Sixth Edition which you are looking at if you are reading this review. If you buy it used, make sure it is the sixth edition!

This book covers every question in the General Class question pool very well. It is broken into bite size pieces so you can study a little and then review the questions from the pool related to the topic you just studied. ARRL provides a great support web site for this book at www.arrl.org/gclm that even includes a PDF of the question pool with the questions arranged by the book topics so you can easily review the questions as you go. (The book tells you what questions to review at the end of each topic.)

I got my technician license three months ago and just passed my element 3 General Class exam with a score of 100% using just this book and an online exam study site. For an online exam study site, I strongly recommend www.kb0mga.net This site lets you take sample tests from the official study question pool. It remembers which questions you haven’t seen yet or got wrong so you will see these questions more often if you take several practice exams. It also randomizes the multiple choice answers so you don’t get lulled into memorizing which answer (A,B,C, or D) is correct for a specific question. This is good since the real exam you take also randomizes the answers from the official question pool.

Note – this book is not for getting your first amateur radio (ham) license. If you don’t have your technician license, get the book Arrl Ham Radio License Manual: All You Need to Become an Amateur Radio Operator (Arrl Ham Radio License Manual) This is also a great book.

Jacobs
I agree with David F ‘s review. I am fairly new to amateur radio and also recently received my (first level) Technician’s license. I do not have a background in radio or electronics but was interested in moving up to the (second level) General license.

This ARRL book, like the Technican’s book, provides the information needed to pass the current FCC General exam (always choose the latest edition for current exam information), along with every question on the exam and the correct answers. Technical information is provided in relatively small chunks, in a manner that is fairly easy to learn and understand.

Due to the contents of the exam, some of the material is quite technical and some (such as which frequencies are assigned for specific uses) simply must be memorized. But the book does try and explain other exam material (such as circuits, components, antennas, etc.) and gives examples.

Again, this book will not teach you everything about ham radio but will help you pass the FCC General license test. It can be used as a self study guide for someone with a technical background, or together with a course taught by a local radio club to really learn the material.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.
Success in 5 days!
By Michael E. Bennett
I joined a group within the Men’s Auxilliary of the VFW to study for the test for the Technician License. The class met every week for six weeks. Five days before the test, I recieved my copy of the General Study Guide. I read about 1/3 of the book and read through all of the study questions. I also took 2 of the free practice tests online. I missed 2 on the first attempt, and a bunch (too many to pass) on the second attempt. I decided it was worth attempting the General test, if I passed the Technician. I passed the Tech test with no problem, so tried the General. I passed (just barely!) I should have taken more time to study, but a pass is a pass! This book really helped! I did have one year of electronics training in high school (one hour a day class 30 years ago) and obtained my Novice License at that time. I had to pass a 5 words per minute Morse code test. I never did have a radio back then, but now have a portable 2 meter handheld that I’ve been having fun with the past 2 weeks. I recommend this book (and the other 2 in the series) for anyone interested in obtaining their Ham License or wanting to upgrade. I am now studing for my Amature Extra License. KD0CMF
