It does nothing. I got one free with an accessory pack, the case and charger worked. Anyway, I tried the thing with three phones and it made zero difference. Not a single tiny difference. But I am an electrical and electronic engineer with 25 years experience, I make wireless internet gear for a living and I’m an Extra class amateur radio operator, so I knew it not only wouldn’t but couldn’t work. Basically you can’t stick something inside the case of a phone and expect it to improve the signal for an antenna it has no attachment to. In many phones, like the Motorola v60i and Krazr I tried, this thing is inserted between the metal back cover and the metal chassis of the phone, there is no way it can do anything to the signal.

Laugh and move on. Keep your money. In Europe the vendors would have been fined tens of thousands of dollars for selling these things.

I live way out in a mountainous development. The low signal and dropped calls don’t change one single bit when I add one of these to my phone. They are completely useless in my 12 years of experience.

I think its a total waste of money! If this actually worked, all the phone manufacturers would have started installing this before selling their devices.
SCAAAAM !!!

I consider myself a very fortunate humane being. Over the course of the original fifteen years of my life I learned most of my professional baseball cognition over the radio. Being a Philadelphia Phillies fan, I was lucky to have grown up listening to two of the best broadcasters in the game in Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn.

I’ve also had the probability to listen the voices of Harry Caray, Vin Scully, Jack Buck and Bob Uecker. Recently, through the beauty of satellite radio, I’ve been competent to pick up each major league broadcast on my XM radio.

What do the great radio broadcasters do better than everyone else? Well, there are a few things that discerned them from the pack and I’d like to share them with you now.

A. Dead Air

“The pitch to Gonzalez is downstairs for a ball.” This type of statement is made perpetually allround the course of a nine inning baseball game. It is rather innocent in and of itself, but it’s what comes after these words that makes the difference.

Your great broadcasters will often times fill this time by not saying anything. This is a key element to their success. They perceive that they do not have to talk incessantly with regards to what is on their stat sheet or their personal opinions. On the contrary, they grant the listener to listen the crowd, visualize the scene and expect the next pitch.

B. When these folks do talk, it’s in general to update you on the game

“We’re in the bottom of the fifth inning, with one out and the Cubs are leading the Phillies 5-3.” Now if you are a Phillies or Cubs fan and you’ve just lately turned the radio on, you’re thankful for a sentence such as this. It gives you an chance to instantaneously become up to date with the game.

A few years ago I do not forget listening to a broadcaster, whose name I don’t recall, state that he used to place an sandglass right besides him in the booth. Why did he do this? Well, he did so because each time the sandglass emptied it reminded him to update his listeners with the inning and the score.

I’ve listened to more than my reasonable part of baseball games where the announcers expended more time telling stories than talking about the game. It is exceedingly discouraging and hindering to listen when it comes to family lives, old time stories and birthday celebrations, when all you in truth want to do is listen to a ballgame.

C. They love their teams, without over dramatizing everything

“Longggggggg Drive deep left field, outta here homerun Mike Schmidt”, “Oh Brother”, “Harry, I don’t believe what I just saw.”

As I reflect back on the memories of my childhood, these are a lot of of the aroused phrases that come to mind. Harry and Richie gave them to me and I’ll never forget them. But I oftentimes wonder how crucial these phrases would have been to me if they had been percentage of the each and everyday broadcasts.

You see, Harry and Richie saved their most dramatic affirmations for the right moments. They knew the game well sufficient to know when something exceedingly indispensable had happened that necessitated to be recognized with an aroused voice. Unfortunately, not all sports announcers have this same sense, just spend a few minutes listening to Brent Musburger on radio or television and you’ll recognise what I mean.

The outstanding announcers love their teams. You may listen it in their voices when things go right and when things go wrong. Yet, their emotion does not demolish the integrity of the broadcast. As a matter of fact, it endears them to the hometown fan who comes to expect that dramatic ninth inning base hit/strikeout call that tells them that their squad has emerged victorious.

Hey, the next time you listen to a baseball game compensate attention to these three elements. I guarantee that without the silence, updates and emotion, your experience will be anything but entertaining.

Although once in a while cringe-worthy, examples of global merchandising bloopers are a utile means of appreciating that we are not all the same. For any company or business conducting a retail effort abroad they must take linguistic and cultural variations seriously.

Below we have provided a top 20 Marketing & Communications Bloopers from throughout the globe.

1) The Japanese company Matsushita Electric was encouraging a new Japanese PC for internet users. Panasonic formulated the new web browser and had received license to use the cartoon reputation Woody Woodpecker as an interactional internet guide. The day before the big merchandising campaign, Panasonic realised it is error and pulled the plug. Why? The ads for the new product featured the following slogan: “Touch Woody – The Internet Pecker.” The company only realized it is cross cultural blunder when an embarrassed American explain what “touch Woody’s pecker” could be interpreted as!

2) The Swedish furniture giant IKEA in some way accorded upon the name “FARTFULL” for one of it is new desks.

3) In the late 1970s, Wang, the American computer company could not understand why it is British sections were refusing to use it is latest motto “Wang Cares”. Of course, to British ears this sounds too close to “Wankers” which would not actually give a very positive effigy to any company.

4) “Traficante” and Italian solid homogeneous inorgani substance water found a outstanding reception in Spain’s underworld. In Spanish it translates as “drug dealer”.

5) In 2002, Umbro the UK sports manufacturer had to withdraw it is new trainers (sneakers) called the Zyklon. The firm received complaints from some organisations and people as it was the name of the gas used by the Nazi regime to murder millions of Jews in concentration camps.

6) Sharwoods, a UK feed manufacturer, expended £6 million on a venture to launch it is new ‘Bundh’ sauces. It received calls from some Punjabi speakers telling them that “bundh” sounded just like the Punjabi word for “arse”.

7) Honda introduced their new car “Fitta” into Nordic countries in 2001. If they had taken the time to try a lot of cross cultural selling exploration they may have ran into that “fitta” was an old word applied in vulgar language to refer to a woman’s genitals in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. In the end they renamed it “Honda Jazz”.

American Motors tried to market it is new car, the Matador, based on the effigy of courage and strength. However, in Puerto Rico the name means “killer” and was not ordinary on the highrisk roads in the country.

9) Proctor & Gamble applied a television mercantile in Japan that was standard in Europe. The ad showed a woman bathing, her husband entering the bathroom and touching her. The Japanese considered this ad an invasion of privacy, unsuitable behaviour, and in very poor taste.

10) Leona Helmsley must have done her homework before she approved a promotion that equated her Helmsley Palace Hotel in New York as comparable to the Taj Mahal–a mausoleum in India.

11) A golf ball fabricating company packaged golf balls in packs of four for commodious buy in Japan. Unfortunately, pronunciation of the word “four” in Japanese sounds like the word “death” and items packaged in fours are unpopular.

12) Pepsodent tried to trade it is toothpaste in Southeast Asia by emphasizing that it “whitens your teeth.” They found out that the local natives chew betel nuts to blacken their teeth which they find attractive.

13) A company advertised eyeglasses in Thailand by featuring a assortment of cute animals wearing glasses. The ad was a poor choice since animals are considered to be a form of low life and no self respecting Thai would wear anything worn by animals.

14) The soft drink Fresca was being promoted by a saleswoman in Mexico. She was amazed that her sales pitch was greeted with laughter, and later embarrassed when she learned that fresca is slang for “lesbian.”

15) Kellogg had to rename it is Bran Buds cereal in Sweden when it encountered that the name roughly translated to “burned farmer.”

16) When Pepsico advertised Pepsi in Taiwan with the ad “Come Alive With Pepsi” they had no idea that it would be translated into Chinese as “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead.”

17) Coors put it is slogan, “Turn It Loose,” into Spanish where it is translation was read as “Suffer From Diarrhea.”

18) Frank Perdue’s chicken slogan, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken” was translated into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate.”

19) Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a illfamed porno mag.

20) During it is 1994 launch campaign, the telecom company Orange had to alter it is ads in Northern Ireland. “The future’s bright … the future’s Orange.” That effort is an publicity legend. However, in the North the term Orange proposes the Orange Order. The implied message that the future is bright, the future is Protestant, loyalist… didn’t sit well with the Catholic Irish population.

Review
“An engaging account of American attempts in radio telegraphy and broadcasting in China…. Certainly much may be learned here by scholars of East Asia or of early-twentieth century international affairs. At the same time, the book… could be captivating for the non-specialist or an undergrad audience.” – Media History

From the Back Cover
Between 1919 and 1941, an array of American businessmen, diplomats, missionaries, and private citizens hoped to fetch American radio to China. Initiatives included attempts to establish Sino-American radio-telegraphy links all over the Pacific, get started shortwave broadcasts of American programming to China, support America broadcasting in China itself, increase sales of American radio equipment, and carve out a niche on China’s airwaves for American missionary broadcasters. However, exuberant faith in radio’s influential powers to promote the presumed gains of American economic and cultural elaboration blinded a heap of Americans to the complexities they faced. American radio in the end magnified rather than mitigated the tensions that pitched Americans versus Chinese nationalists and Japanese imperialists in the years before the Pacific War. By drawing on scholarship in the history of technology, communications, media studies, and US alien relations, the book’s exploration into the kinship among these fields enhances our understanding of today’s globalizing world

About the Author
MICHAEL A. KRYSKO is Assistant Professor of history at Kansas State University, USA. Prior to joining the faculty at Kansas State in 2006, he was a fellow member of the history section at Dowling College in New York. He presently lives in Manhattan, Kansas.

Interwar era attempts to exaggerate US radio into China floundered in the face of flawed US policies and approaches. Situated at the intersection of media studies, engineering science studies, and US alien relations, this study frames the ill-fated radio initiatives as symptomatic of an growingly bothered US-East Asian kinship before the Pacific War.

The metamorphic act of emergence from nymph to Dragonfly strips away our beliefs of containment of our actions, our limitations, our doubts, and our self doubt. ‘The Spirit of the Dragonfly’ reminds us that everything is possible, we may achieve our dreams and our goals, we learn to perceive regarding ourselves, and our self belief. The Dragonfly Spirit is the keeper of our dreams, seeing out unfeigned potential and ability, giving us the capability to fulfill our birthright.

The wings of the Dragonfly reflect the colours of our Universe and connects us to their energy. The power of the person colour or colours aid us achieve our aspirations.

The choice of colours of our clothes, the interiors of our surroundings, even the colour of our car may have a positive or negative influence on what we wish to achieve in life. The wearing of dull or drab colours sends out a negative message, saying inside we actually don’t want to achieve or fulfill our ambitions, the colours we surround ourselves with reflect back to us the message we send out, just as the reflectiveness of the wings of the Dragonfly.

If we want to alter we need to show we are ready and more than willing to grant the changes to occur through the energy generated by the vibrations given off from the colour connected to peculiar energy of the experience we are seeking. If we want to stand out work for our contribution in the workplace we will have to wear shades of red and violet. If we wish to get started anew we must wear shades of green, and for a sentiment of dandier empowerment we will have to wear shades of yellow.

To invent a dandier intuitive ability, and feel more deeply connected with the Universe we ought to wear shades of blue and indigo.

We ought to use colours to express who we are, our aspirations of desire and experience in our lives. We must learn from Mother Nature, with it is tremendous array of colour, and how nature uses colour, whether for the pollination of the flowers, in the cycle of birth and rebirth, or the use of colour to deter or drive away predators. Through the ‘Spirit of the Dragonfly’ we may use colour in the same way as nature to attract or deter through the messages we send out to others, and the reflective reactions of others to the messages we send out, to support the dandier understanding of our self.

In the beginning of the life cycle of the Dragonfly the Nymph emerges from the egg, spending as long as five years underneath the water surface, using internal gills to breathe, the use their extendable jaws to cut away at other invertebrates, and even vertebrates such as tadpoles and fish, In the same way the Spirit of the Dragonfly may instruct us to combine emotion with rational thought, by gutting away at the elements of our lives, that we cannot control. This is peculiarly helpful in dealing with addictions, such as over eating, drinking to excess and drug addiction, other addictions such as procrastination, gambling, over spending, daydreaming, overworking and other addictions, which do not concede us to live a balanced and fulfilled lifestyle.

Most addictions are due to suppressed aroused energies and traumas that are being salaried through the addiction. Over eating often compensates for sentiment unloved, and drinking for depression, or a depressive life style. There are often other elements of ones lifestyle that are out of control and need addressing, before they may be resolved.

Often one has to peer beneath the aroused waters, into the murky depths, to perceive the causes and what is genuinely happening inside oneself.

When the Nymph is ready to metaboli process into an adult, it climbs up with the assistance of an emergent plant at night, and as it does it is breathing pattern changes inside the larva’s body, then skin splits at a weak point behind the head , and the adult Dragonfly crawls out of it is old larval skin, waits for the sun to rise, pumps up is wings and swiftly flies off, the Dragonfly is the worlds most immediate flying insect, propelling itself at speeds of 19 to 38 miles per hour, dependent upon the species. In the same way using the energy generated by the Spirit of the Dragonfly one may swiftly come to conclusions and new perceptivenesses that support you propel yourself from the old larval skin into new ways thought, action and lifestyle. This is the point of metamorphication , the most necessary time for ‘seeing’ through illusions, and being receptive to the messages being sent to you from the Universe directly through the Spirit of the Dragonfly. We will have to leave behind our old beliefs of powerlessness, irrational fears, and untrue limitations, you have the choice of your beliefs and your focus for the future. Although one always the power to change ones circumstances, this is a pivotal point and with the energy from the Spirit of the Dragonfly, one without doubt or question shows one is ready to leave behind all the excuses for not making changes, and taking on the full obligation for what we make of our life, by making the suitable changes now while one has the energy, help and power of the emergent Spirit of the Dragonfly.

People who have absorbed and retain the energy from the Spirit of Dragonfly are often good healers, and comprehend the use of Colour for Healing, they may sense or see the colours that one carries in their aura, and may learn how to support that person by altering the colour rays so the person may be a share in their own healing process, rather than being dependent on others to carry out the healing procedure for them, which scarcely ever works. This may be shown by the following examples, if a person carries a heavy murky colour of red within their aura, leading to power struggles, ceaseless irritations, and things always going wrong, the healer may aid in replacing the heavy murky reds, with lighter clearer reds to empower the person with confidence, Or if a persons aura is depleted in critical energy and colour the healer may instruct the person to learn to draw in the energy rays through the colours of the Universe, both seen and unseen to repair and invigorate the aura.

For the recharging of the aura, which is specially necessary for the duration of periods of stress and trauma, and is necessitated by healers and by all of us at least assorted times a week, or even once of twice a day. One of the easiest and most pleasant ways or restoring or building up ones aura is to get comfortable in a placid place where one feels at home, and to focus on all the colours of the rainbow and to visualise them entering into the aura thru the Universal flow, if one needs further and added energy they may call upon the Spirit of the Dragonfly, by visualising the rainbow colours reflecting of the wings of the dragonfly as it flies over meadow, gardens and streams, if one is a novice to this and there is a good deal of apprehension, one may comprise remembered fond memory places into the flight of the butterfly, one may also do this before going to sleep at night ensuring a good nights rest and awakening in the morning sentiment completely rested and invigorated, or one may take a lot of short timeout in the lunch break to be totally restored for the rest of the day. With practise one may learn to be capable to this in almost any place and situation.

For the firstborn time one may use a tangible item, which may be concentered upon, a glass paperweight is to be commended as it performs both functions, the glass is made from silica from rock crystals so stores energy, a Dragonfly Paperweight will support to fetch harmoniousness in the environment.

People with the Spirit of the Dragonfly are very good at deciphering the colours of ones emotions and homing in on what emotions control our lives. We get so used to how we feel, it becomes the norm, we may not know that we are downhearted or hold levels of anger or hostility, or we hold within grief or remorse from events that occurred in the long past. We project these emotions onto other, and find ourselves attracting like people who are lowspirited or hostile.

In our Western Culture we are oftentimes brought up not to show and to stifle our emotions, so this energy get forced down, trapped and built up in our lower chakras, Using the energy from the ‘Spirit of the Dragonfly’ calling it into the lower chakras, the energy may stir up this trapped energy, which has been manifesting itself through the body, we may get it moving again. This remotion is not actually painful, in fact it is less painful than having all this trapped energy attracting more of the same. If you do not know a person who is empowered with the Dragonfly Spirit to help you through the process, call upon the energy of the Dragonfly Spirit through your mind.

Think with regards to the energy moving through the lower chakras, infusing them with clear brilliant colours, which you may use reflecting from the wings of the dragonfly for further and added potency, and well being. You may feel a little emotional, this is a good sign it shows the procedure is working it does not take long for the energy to clear, and you need to be sentiment these emotions, cry yell, stamp you feet, do whatsoever it takes to get that energy up and away, always bearing in mind you have a powerful associate in the form of the Spirit of the Dragonfly working within you, and for you, and supporting you for the duration of this process.

If you do not feel convinced or scared in regards to carrying out this procedure on you own you must consult a registered substitute healer, or other qualified therapist before engaging in this sort of healing work. It is a unfeigned sign of oneself to recognise when you require support and go out and seek it. If you do need any assistance in finding a qualified you may find the regulatory authorities on the web, or you may contact us directly and we shall give you the details of you nearest registered qualified healer, all our services are free, we are here to support you whenever you need us.

People working with The Spirit of the Dragonfly often work using Crystals and other Semi Precious Stone, where energy may be drawn from the bright colours and the bright inclusions within the stones, all ‘Dragonfly People’ may boost their energy and lift their spirits by including the stones all around their homes, and a sentiment of well being all around the household may be achieved. Sunstone is in particular if they are of good quality, with a lot of sparkling inclusions.

Just as the Dragonfly, it may be a great deal of substantial time for your transformation to take place, from Nymph grubbing regarding underneath the surface to sparkling new Dragonfly, with the freedom to propel yourself into the bright new world, At times it will seem difficult or even impossible, but just think of the metamorphosise of the dragonfly, and do not forget always you are gradually endowing yourself, and these changes are growing more inviolable little by little each day, and you are learning to recognise and grasp more with regards to yourself. You will come out into the daylight with Higher Power and Spirit, which will always stay inside you, and carry on to grow, as you proceed in the Knowledge of Your Inner Self and the Power of the Universe.

This power is within your Soul and Spirit, and the Energy is from Our Universe, how we interpret this is from our inner self, there are numerous paths to follow, the freedom to follow your paths is what you are looking to achieve, experience and follow. We ask you only to use your new power wisely and support us to aid others. The Spirit of the Dragonfly is a very powerful spirit, we are upon this planet for such a short time, and we are never to old to make this transformation.

The Dragonfly has a 360 degree field of vision, the eyes have 30,000 facets, each of which is a discerned light sensing organ. The Dragonfly has a peculiar optical illusion called motion camouflage, moving in such a way to project itself as a stationary object, whilst moving at great speed, as a method of self shelter versus all that would cause them harm.

The oldest known species of Dragonfly are 320million years old, and appear in fossils.

Dragons have often times been thought of as flying dragons.

In Native American Culture Dragonflies represent swiftness and activity, for the Navajo they symbolise pure water, and feature commonly in Zuni Pottery, stylised as a double barred cross, appear in Hopi rock art and on Pueblo necklaces. It is said in a good deal of Native American Beliefs that Dragonflies are likewise kept as a symbol of renewal after a time of outstanding hardship.

In Japan dragonflies are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness, and ofttimes appear in art and literature, particularly Haiku, A early system of verse which remains today. In ancient mythology, Japan was known as Akitsushima, which means ‘Land of the Dragonflies’. The love for Dragonflies is reflected by the fact that there are conventional names for closely all of the 200 species of Dragonflies found in and around Japan.

This dragonfly necklace would symbolize the waterbugs who become dragonflies (a story to explain death) to children.

It is very cute, has great detail, and has wonderful sparkle. I get compliments on this every time I wear it.

The dragonfly itself measures just over 1″ (length) by 1″ (width).

I recommend pairing this with Sterling Silver 22mm Hoop Earrings or with a simple pair of silver ball studs. I have tried to get matching dragonfly earrings to no avail. Perhaps Amazon will come out with them soon.

I think this necklace is great for all ages. The chain looks very delicate and does tangle easily, but it has withstood my 3 year old looking at and touching the dragonfly repeatedly. I suggest storing it on a necklace hanger, rather than in the blue pouch it arrives in.

It’s very pretty and well designed. But it is smaller than it appears to be in the picture, and the chain is very thin.

It was with regards to 22 years ago when I watched my basi ROCKY movie (Rocky III) and it in truth inspired me to get up from defeat (after failing my exams) and to train hard to become a winner in life.

Today, 22 years later, I find myself being inspired once again by Sylvestor Stallone’s latest Rocky Movie (Rocky Balboa- share 6). In this latest movie, Rocky is aged 60+ and retired from boxing. One day, Rocky decides to come out of retirement and to get back into the ring. He feels the need to fight because of aroused issues that he needs to resolve within himself. Naturally, he is criticized and made fun of because he is fighting opponents half his age.

His son (a corporate executive in his 30s) is wholly versus the idea. His career is going nowhere and he blames his father for casting a huge shadow over him. His friends make fun of him because of who his father is.

This is where the 60-year old Rocky gives his son a heart-to-heart reprimand with regards to how he needs to stop blaming and take charge of his life. A saddened Rocky says he remembers when his son could fit in the palm of his hand.

He says that he saw outstanding potential in him and when he firstborn started off in life, he did great. However,at a lot of point, he changed. He lost his way and started blaming other things and people for his own misfortune. Telling him:

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or not anyone is gonna hit as hard as life.

But it ain’t when it comes to how hard you hit; it’s in regards to how hard you may get hit, and keep moving forward. . It’s How much you may take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.

Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be more than willing to take the hits, and not point fingers and blame other people. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that!”

This movie had a huge affect on me just like the introductory few Rocky movies did because what was said was so unfeigned in my own life. ” Its not how hard you hit, but how hard you may get hit and keep moving forward.”

I have found that in my life, I have met so a heap of people who were much smarter, gifted and luckier than me. What made me more successful at the end of the day was my capacity to get hit again and again and to keep moving forward. I never gave up. However, I know of a great deal of friends who got hit hard by life and could never find the courage to get up again. Instead, they quit dreaming and accepted a mediocre life.

There were some times in my life when I did get hit hard and felt that I had troubles I could never solve. There were times when I felt that life was unfair and too painful to live. What kept me going forward was that I knew that no matter how bad, each problem will not last forever. Every recession will end. Dawn always breaks after the darkest hour. It was this faith that permitted me to keep getting up.

o When I got expelled from school at age 9, I held moving forward

o When my parents split up when I was aged 13, I kept moving forward

o When my firstborn girlfriend dumped me just before my major exams (and I was subsequently dumped by 2 other girls), I kept moving forward

o When everyone looked down on me because I got poor grades in school, I held moving forward

o When my interior design business went bankrupt (Losing me $250,000), I kept moving forward

o When I lost over $300,000 in the stock market as an early novice investor, I held moving forward

o When my firstborn book, ‘I Am Gifted, So Are You!’ was rejected by over 9 publishers, I kept moving forward

o When only 1 person signed up for my initial Patterns of Excellence program 7.5 years ago, and everyone thought that my company would never make it, I held moving forward

o When I lost all the cash I made from my mobile disco business because I was cheated by a provider I trusted, I held moving forward

Whenever we see humans achieve outstanding things, it is easy to think that they had less difficultnesses and less obstacles than we have. That their brilliance, luck or talent gave them super humane abilities to sail through life easily. That everything always goes according to plan.

I may tell you from experience that things NEVER EVER always go according to plan. 80% of the goals you set and plans you make will never go the way you want. Things will screw up and obstacles will appear that will knock you down. Its all share of the game of life.

Have you heard of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars? On the surface, it seems this guy could do not wrong. He had the talent to develop one of the most successful franchises in the world, Star Wars that made hundreds of millions of dollars.

Did you know of all the things that went wrong? When George Lucas had the imagination of creating the particular effects for the battle scenes, the technology did not subsist at the time. That didn’t stop Lucas. He set up a company, Industrial Light & Magic to give rise to and construct the particular effects necessitated to make Star Wars.

Did it work? Not at first. During production, everything that could have perchance gone defective went wrong! At the end of sixteen weeks of filming, every one had each reason to believe it would fail.

The instrumentation held breaking down, the actors could not get along and everything that was filmed turned out lousy and had to be discarded. The movie had grossly exceeded the primary budget, it had overrun the filming schedule, the special effects unit could not fabricate the desired particular effects and every one had the opinion that the movie was too childish.

As a result, 20th Century Fox studios (the producers) wanted to cancel the movie and fire Lucas. After Lucas begged for a probability to save the movie, they gave him three days to finish two weeks of work that was lost. It seemed like an totally unlikely task.

What made things worse was that Lucas suffered severe chest pains in the middle of all this and was rushed to hospital for severe stress and exhaustion. Everyone thought that the movie would fail (even some of the actors didn’t dare to go for the premier).

But Lucas just wouldn’t quit. Lucas hired a triple filming crew, separated the film stage into three sets and directed three scenes concurrently! Within 3 days, he filmed weeks worth of scenes and finished the movie only moments before the movie premier. The rest was history!

I am sure you have heard of Honda Motor Corporation, one of the most successful automakers from Japan. Again what made Honda a success was that it is founder, Soichiro Honda was competent to take the most difficult hits and still get up and move forward.

In 1938, while Soichiro was still in school, when he started a workshop to formulate the piston ring that he hoped he could trade to Toyota. He worked 7 days a week, even sleeping in his workshop at times. When cash ran out with no success, he pawned his wife’s jewelry for working capital.

Finally, came the day he finished his piston ring and was competent to trade it to Toyota. However, he was told that the rings did not meet their standards! Soichiro went back to school for 2 years to improve his invention only to suffer ridicule when the engineers saw his design.

He refused to quit. After two more years of struggle and improvement, he successful won the contract with Toyota. He necessitated to build a factory to supply Toyota. Unfortunately, his timing was bad. At this time, the Japanese government was gearing up for war and necessitated all the concrete for the war effort, so he could not get the concrete necessary to build his factory.

Instead of giving up, he developed a new concrete-making procedure that enabled him to build the factory. With the factory now built, he was ready for production, but again, his luck was bad. His factory was bombed twice by American war planes and steel became unavailable, too.

Instead of giving up, he started gathering surplus gasoline cans discarded by US fighters – “Gifts from President Truman,” he called them, which became the new raw materials for his rebuilt formulating process. Again, his timing was bad. An earthquake hit and his factory was destroyed the third time.

After the war, an extreme gasoline shortage forced people to walk or use bicycles. Soichiro saw this prospect and built a tiny engine and attached it to his bicycle. His neighbors wanted one, and altho he tried, materials could not be found and he was unable to supply the demand. He likewise didn’t have the cash to build another factory to make these ‘motorbikes’.

He still didn’t quit. he wrote letters to 18,000 bicycles shop owners and asked them to recompense him in progressed so he could build his factory to trade them his newly formulated motorbikes. Unfortunately, the basi models were too bulky to work well, so he continued to fabricate and adapt, until finally, ‘The Super Cub’ became a success and took Japan by storm. With success in Japan, Honda started out exporting his bicycle engines to Europe and America.

This was how the Honda Motor Corporation was formed. Was that the end of his problems? Nope! As he ran Honda, it went into lots of financial problems. Honda likewise went near to bankruptcy five times, only to be turned around just in time. Everytime he took a hit, Soichiro would just get up, learn from his errors and keep moving forward.

Today, Honda Corporation employs over 100,000 humans in the USA and Japan, and is one of the world’s biggest automobile companies. Honda’s magnificent engineering science and clever marketing even resulted in Honda motorcycles out-selling Triumph and Harley-Davidson in their respective home markets.

So, the dandier the success you want in life, the more prominent the hits you got to be more than willing to take. There is a price for everything. A Suzuki costs $30,000 and a Ferrari costs $1m (at least in Singapore).

Success too has a price. The price is massive rejection, frustration, and hardwork, People never succeed either because they thought that success comes easy or because they are not more than willing to recompense the price!

Album Description
American VI: Ain’t No Grave, is the sixth and final installment of Johnny Cash’s critically-acclaimed American Recordings album series. As with the former five albums in the American Recordings series, American VI was invented by Rick Rubin.
American VI is deeply elegiac and spiritual, with each song it is own piece of the puzzle of life’s mysteries and challenges – the pursuit of salvation, the importance of friendships, the dream of peace, the power of faith, and the joys and adversities that entail simple survival. It is an achingly personal and intimate statement, as, from the end of the line, Johnny Cash looks back on a most extraordinary life.

Like its predecessors, it comprises pared-back covers, as well as (in this case), an original (and purpotedly final) composition by Cash.

“I Corinthians 15:55″ is the lone original with lyrics looking at his mortality and the hope of seeing his Redeemer. Mortality, love, redemption, and spirituality colour the 10 songs on this beautiful CD, and I must say, for what supposedly comprises his last recordings, he sounds a lot stronger than he did on songs like “If you could read my mind” (from “American V”), or “Bridge over troubled water” (“American IV), where he was slightly reedy.

“Redemption day” (a Sheryl Crow composition) is a beautiful acoustic ballad that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Western movie, with Cash singing about the “train that’s heading straight to heaven’s gate”, while “For the good times” (a Kris Kristofferson composition) is a heartbreaking farewell to his lover as they part and he reminisces the good times they shared.

“Can’t help but wonder where I’m bound” touches on his journey on earth and his curiousity over his final destination. The solemn “Last night I had the strangest dream” finds him dreaming of a world with no more war, against a richer musical backdrop than the other songs.

Highlight, in my opinion” is “Ain’t no grave”, his fearless and defiant proclamation that no grave can hold his body down when he hears the trumpet sound, and his looking forward to meeting Jesus, his mother and father. Chiming bell sounds, Soft guitars and banjo set to shuffling shackled-footstep sounds which provide the gentle beat to this stirring song.

As with the previous discs in the series, Cash inhabits and makes each song his own. It is obvious he knew his sojourn here was done and the songs reflect his strong belief of a life well lived and being reunited with loved ones on the other side of eternity. A masterpiece!

These are among Cash’s very last recordings, and it’s true, his voice wasn’t what it used to be (a review I read somewhere actually said Cash’s voice got better closer to his death, or words to that effect; if you’re offended and rather miffed, you aren’t the only one), but that really isn’t an issue on GRAVE. Sure, his voice slips here and there–but not as much as it did on AMERICAN V. And these are, overall, a better batch of songs, perhaps made slightly better by–of course–Cash himself, as well as the sparse acoustic arrangement.

This time, Cash covers songs from Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson, Hawaii, the Bible, and classic country radio; plus we get one of his final originals, “I Corinthians 15:55.” Every single tune here is strong, a testament to who Cash was and the life he lived, especially at the end. There is not one disappointing song on here, and I mean that quite literally. From the opener (which sounds a bit too much like “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” but maybe that isn’t a bad thing) through the closer “Aloha Oe,” every single one of these tunes/performances reaches into your soul and pulls at your heartstrings. And it’s not because these were Cash’s “final” recordings; it’s because of the passion he put into them, and the passion that went into Rick Rubin’s finishing them up.

Overall, Cash and Rubin’s “American Recordings” series was one of the best things to hit the music world; I’d say “country music,” but let’s face it–compared to the current state of affairs in country music, the “American Recordings” belong in an entirely different category altogether. AIN’T NO GRAVE ain’t no exception, if I may say so. It’s one of the series’ stronger entries, even if Cash’s voice wasn’t as hearty as at the beginning. Rest assured: if you purchase this album, and if you love music, you won’t be disappointed. I’m there’s more exploitation on the way; but this album comes off as genuine, as heart-felt, because it’s not a compilation or some tribute: it’s Cash himself, even ending on the song of his choice. This is a great album, plain and simple, from one of music’s true (and too few) original talents.

The sixth volume of the Americana is a reminder of his greatness.

During the last few years of Johnny Cash’s life he spent much of his time recording songs that meant a great deal to him. We know from his daughter, Rosanne Cash’s recent CD, that her father loved the old time folk/gospel songs. This CD brings us the uplifting, redeeming qualities that may have been in Johnny Cash’s mind as he sang the songs he loved. This is a gruff old voice, but the meaning of his life surrounds us.

Rick Rubin produced this CD, as he has all of the Americana series. There are ten songs on this CD that bring the face of death before us. And, at the same time, we are privy to a forgiving spirit that has seen it all.

‘Ain’t No Grave’ is so perfect, as it opens up the view of the spirit that grows as the CD proceeds. Nothing is going
to keep him down.

‘Redemption Day’ is a Sheryl Crow song that had an anti-war stance, but with Johnny Cash it is a song sorrow and love for all- merciful.

‘For The Good Times’ an old Kris Kristofferson tune, is my favorite- an old hand, giving a tip of the hat to the times of yore when things were good. A sentimental favorite that we all can relate to.

‘Corinthians’- ‘death where is thy sting’- looking forward to seeing those gone before.

‘Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound’ a Tom Paxton tune, wandering and wondering what he was meant to be. A look back and forward to whatever is coming.

‘Satisfied Mind’-everything that has gone before is done and done-some regrets but not many- ‘believe there is no doubt;- he leaves this old world with a satisfied mind’.

‘I Don’t Hurt Anymore’- an old folk/western song- all hurts are forgotten and forgiven. Loves lost and new ones found.

‘Cool Water’- was this not an old Frankie Lane song- we can feel the parched throat and the release with that cool water.
‘Dan can’t you see that green tree with water running free for you and me’. Love this tune.

‘Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream’-there was no war, no strife, no poor, no more war ever. The people were dancing round and round, guns and swords were scattered all around’. All life’s woes are solved and it is time to rejoice.
.
‘Aloha Oe-Aloha Oe Queen Lili’uokalani’s Hawaiian goodbye: ‘Until we meet again’

Johnny Cash has given us his peace of mind that carries on. He wishes for peace and love while he faced his mortality.
Over the years, Johnny Cash always sang the tunes that were right for him at that moment, in his death, he continues.

Aloha Oe, Johnny Cash

Looking for a new iPod Docking Station may be tough. There are a great deal of dissimilar merchandise to choose from. Some are equipped with a crazy amount of features, and others have just a few. The sheer number of merchandise out there may confuse consumers.

The merchandise come in all dissimilar shapes, sizes, and colors. You will have to choose one based on your needs and wants. It all depends on the type of features and functions you want and of course what price point you have in mind. With so a lot of dissimilar merchandise out there, you are sure to find one which fits your lifestyle.

Before you make your purchase, be sure to check for iPod docking station reviews online. See what other users are saying when it comes to the productions you are considering. You may also visit electronic stores such as Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Fry’s to see and feel the merchandise in person. But the best deals are most likely found online. There are a couple things to consider when choosing an iPod Docking Station:

Features

The amount and complexity of features range from very basic to extreme. The most minimal are just docks fitted with stereo speakers. These docks plainly let you play music through speakers. However, the majority of the docking stations these days come equipped with galore dissimilar features and functions. Standard features on iPod docking stations with speakers include recharging of the iPod while it’s docked, am/fm radio tuners, and integrated clocks with alarm systems. Some gadgets feature sub-woofers and bass systems. These act as rightful stand alone sound systems. Remote controls are likewise a mutual feature – remotes concede the user to to a complete degree control the docked iPod & iPhone.

Portability

This is one category in which a lot of buyers overlook. Like the iPod, docking stations may likewise be portable. If you want a portable device or if you travel a lot and want a travel ipod docking station then these are the things you need to look for.

Size is plainly one factor, the littler it is, the requiring little effort it is to move. Another issue is whether the product may be battery powered or not. Some stations may only run on A/C power while others are capable to run on both A/C and battery power.

Compatibility

Compatibility is something you need to assert when looking for an iPod docking station with speakers. Docking stations aren’t just made for the iPod. Because there are so numerous models of iPhones & iPods, be careful and make sure you choose a product that is compatible with your device. Though most are frequent 30 pin connectors, double check the product description before purchasing.

Design

Fred Stopsky has expended the past 50 years as a secondary teacher and college educator who has taught over 12,000 teachers. He is the co-author of “The American Experience: The History of the United States and Social Studies in a Global Society,” as well as the author of almost a dozen other books including, “Freedom and Control: Censorship in America,” “George Bush on the Planet of Xul,” “Nuremberg Principles and International Law,” “Catholicism and Slavery,” and “Bartolome de las Casas: Champion of Indian Rights.” Fred also invented the Veterans Accelerated Urban Learning for Teachers (VAULT) program to aid Vietnam War veterans further their education.

Tyler: Thank you for joining me today, Fred. I have to say you have rather a title for your new book. To begin, would you tell our readers a little bit with regards to how you would classify the book?

Fred: Thank you Tyler for having me. “Don Rumsfeld & Dick Cheney In Hell” is a political satire that mixes sardonic wit with severe exploration of key issues confronting America and the world. We live in interesting times, so political satire will have to possess offbeat qualities. It’s a book regarding political and social issues, but it is comic mood enables readers to smile and engage them in severe thinking.

Tyler: What is the plot of the story?

Fred: Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney awake to discover they are in an anteroom in Hell with Ken Lay of Enron fame, who has been told by the Devil to coordinate the procedure by which a host of witnesses will offer testimony to determine if the two men belong down there or way up in Heaven. People from each place on the political spectrum, along with frequent citizens, offer evidence. The book depicts how each person, disregarding whether widely known and esteemed or not, is impacted by the jokes of these two men and has something to offer in the way of testimony. The material is fundamentally staged in a dialog manner making for easy reading. Each chapter enables a queer group of persons to offer testimony. In all cases, assorted views are presented. The Devil remains off to the side until the end when he begins injecting cutting remarks.

Tyler: I understand the Devil calls on assorted witnesses to make his decision. Most of these witnesses are widely known and esteemed celebrities, but not inevitably politicians. How did you determine which celebrities to include?

Fred: Great question. I wanted to present the views of conservatives like Ann Coulter or Tom de Lay because their words are sufficient in themselves to indict Rumsfeld and Cheney. I merely had to concede Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Al Franken, Michael Moore, Jay Leno, and Howard Stern to carry out their shows because in modern times we recompense severe attention to comedians and consider politicians to be comics. In particular, I felt compelled to concede that terrifi young man, Pat Tillman, to speak for himself as well as family members of those who have died. I love Kinky Friedman and am an admirer of Willie Nelson so I just had to work them in. Mixed in with the widely known and esteemed are prisoners from Abu Ghraib and galore regular working class people. Of course, I even drew upon a Law and Order team to uncover the TRUE story of the widely known and esteemed Weapons of Mass Destruction. I believe most readers will be amazed to discover the real meaning of “Weapons of Mass Destruction;” this data is alone worth the price of the book.

Tyler: All the celebrities are from our time it seems, except the Marx Brothers. Why did you determine to include them?

Fred: The Marx Brothers represent the height of American zany, madcap humor and who else could match the zany madcap ideas of Rumsfeld and Cheney? I had fun permitting the Marx Brothers to run wild in the chapter with the contemporary Robin Williams because these people are capable in their satirical offbeat remarks to make more sense than any fellow member of the Bush administration. Please also remember, Groucho Marx was president of Freedonia, so he is as much an expert on politics as Rumsfeld and Cheney. As Groucho once put it, “fish and politicians smell after three days.” Whew, after four years, the smell…

Tyler: Fred, tell me a little bit with regards to the non-famous characters–especially, did you include soldiers who fought or even passed away in the war, or family members such as the mother who camped out at Bush’s ranch in Texas for weeks after her son was killed, only to have the president refuse to speak to her?

Fred: Every day I read blogs written by members of the military and armed forces publications such as the “Stars & Stripes” and “Army Times” to keep abreast how they feel. I came throughout assorted things written by mothers of soldiers who passed from physical life and included their views in chapter 14. I remained true to their feelings; one of them was very pro-Bush. I also was tremendously impacted by the story of Pat Tillman. In doing exploration on this fine young man I came across he was an intellectual who read enormously and was very patriotic. I tried to convey his sensations and those of his family members who are furious regarding how Pat’s death was used for political purposes. I am rather proud the account in the book coincides in an outstanding manner with what is now being revealed to the American media — that George Bush was told the real story by General McChrystal of Pat’s death and ignored the truth to stir up anger and hatred. I could never in good sense of right and wrong ever lie when it comes to the sensations of family members or those who died.

Tyler: Fred, how did you come up with the idea for this book?

Fred: This may come all over as a bit of corn, but the deaths of our sweet young men and women has given me outstanding pain. I served in the military, and have worked to aid veterans, so they stay close to my heart. I was walking one day thinking when it comes to the day’s casualties when in my mind I heard the words, “the Devil himself couldn’t formulate more chaos and death than what is going on today in Iraq.” Within a moment, I had the idea for the book.

Tyler: Fred, tell me a little bit in regards to your own military service? Has the military changed for the better or worse since you served?

Fred: I turned down a draft deferment in 1951 and joined the US Army for the duration of the Korean War. I went through four months of basic training and then my unit got orders for Korea– to Heartbreak Ridge. By some crazy mix-up, my orders were misplaced and I wound up going to Europe. Several of my dear friends were killed on those hills in Korea. In fact, my decision to become a teacher stemmed from their deaths, I wanted to do something in life to aid prevent war. In those days everyone served, rich and poor, college educated and those who never finished grade school. Unlike WWII, the Korean War was as nonpopular as the war in Iraq. Just like today, in the early stages of the war, reservists and National Guards troops were called up. But men who were drafted quickly substituted them. Everyone who was on the front line put in 18 months and then went home with no return responsibility to Korea. After General Eisenhower was elected president, he without delay pursued negotiations and arranged for a truce so our fighting men could come home. We were fortunate to have Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower as presidents, two men who highly valued the Constitution and were more than willing to negotiate to end fighting. Of course, both men had served in the military and understood the meaning of death, something unknown to George Bush. I many times wish we had a Dwight Eisenhower as president–he was a Republican, but a man who loved and cherished the Constitution.

Tyler: Fred, why did you choose the devil rather than God to have a trial for Rumsfeld and Cheney?

Fred: The Devil has always for me represented chaos, disorder, pain and torture. Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush are the best exemplifiers of these humane qualities. If there is a Hell down there, then it is the fitting place for those violating our basic humane values. Anyway, I didn’t want to bother God who spends time caring for those who have love and joy in their hearts.

Tyler: You also include various deceased presidents as share of the trial. Will you tell us which ones and why you chose them? What kind of legitimacy do the presidents add to the trial?

Fred: I have read broad into the life of Abraham Lincoln. I ofttimes become sick to my stomach at President Bush’s refusal to honor those who died. Lincoln continually visited sick soldiers and was at numerous funerals. He also invited family members of those who passed from physical life to see him at the White House. George Bush is no Lincoln. Bill Clinton has been in an outstanding manner quiet regarding responding to charges that he someways is responsible for al-Qaeda or 9/11. I wanted to offer him an chance to refute those lies and directly confront Don and Dick regarding their tragic mistakes. Harry Truman is one of my favored presidents. He always told it like it was and never minced words. He was a self-taught man who loved and revered his beloved Constitution, and I know he is turning over in his grave at what Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush have done to that document.

Tyler: What are the crimes or injustices for which Rumsfeld and Cheney are accused in the book?

Fred: They measuredly lied regarding causes for war–the widely known and esteemed Weapons of Mass Destruction. Please read my chapter where a Law and Order unit in the long run uncovers it is mystery. These men have violated constitutional warrantees regarding reasonable trials, they have discarded the Geneva Convention which each fellow member of the military knows will have to be obeyed, they have supported spying on the intermediate American citizen, and they will have to take a good deal of obligation for the deaths of over 3600 Americans.

Tyler: : Do you feel the American system has failed that these two politicians have not been punished for their actions?

Fred: I believe the American Constitution is the biggest political document in humane history. I believe in the American political system. Sometimes, we Americans move slowly, but our scheme in the end always works. I am an eternal optimist when it comes to the American people.

Somehow, in a lot of way, the American humans in the long run figure out phonies and charlatans and quacks. Our system has not failed because books like mine and others are alerting our nation to the madness of those running our government.

Tyler: What kind of response has the book received so far?

Fred: As I said, I am the eternal optimist. I have been receiving a great deal of praise and compliments, as well as stellar reviews so far. Even altho knowingness has been slow and low-key after being available for just over one month, I believe in the end the book will take pleasure in a outstanding sale.

Tyler: Have you had any negative responses? When Michael Moore’s movie, “Fahrenheit 911″ came out numerous theatres refused to show it, claiming it would be unpatriotic when our troops were fighting, yet it seems disgust for the war has grown mainly in the three years since then. How would you respond to persons accusing you of being unpatriotic, or hasn’t that been a problem?

Fred: Some people view me as unpatriotic for attacking the president for the duration of wartime. They argue we ought to stay merged when soldiers are dying. We had elections for the duration of WWII and the Korean War, Republicans said horrid things with regards to Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, but our nation survived. I find it ironic that Republicans were vicious in their attacks upon Presidents Roosevelt and Truman, but now assert we ought to keep away from attacking the president–of course today, he is a Republican. The essence of patriotism is fighting for one’s beliefs. In entering the US Army I took a solemn oath to defend and uphold the Constitution and it was made clear that if a president violated that document, our introductory obligation was to the Constitution, not to the president. If I fail to attack and criticize a president who violates the Constitution, then I am derelict in my responsibilities as a citizen.

Saddam Hussein never attacked this nation. Our president lied to the American people regarding reasons for going to war. I wholly supported our attacks in Afghanistan versus those who initiated the 9/11 attacks. I agree with the view of the new prime minister of England, Gordon Brown, who is now arguing terrorism is best handled by police forces. You can’t have a war versus an abstraction –terrorism. In terms of America, our law enforcement personnel will best handle terrorism.

I will have to confess to a heap of sensations of disgust when those who have never fought for their nation attack the patriotism of those who served–what Republicans did to John Kerry was unpardonable. I do not question the patriotism or commitment of any American; such words are not part of the American way of life.

Tyler: Fred, I brought up earlier that you likewise have written “George Bush on the Planet of Xul.” Would you tell us a little bit with regards to that book? I’m assuming it is also a satire of the Bush administration, so why did you feel the need to write this second book, “Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney in Hell”?

Fred: I am a science fiction addict so writing science fiction is portion of my dream. One day while reading a sci-fi novel the idea just entered my mind, “What would take place if aliens got in contact with George Bush?–They would go crazy attempting to grasp his mind.” The book is with regards to aliens from the planet of Xul who take Bush to their planet and then fetch a host of persons from Earth who may aid decipher the manner in which his mind functions. Oh, the humans run range from businessmen, writers, politicians, actors, comedians, and so on. I had fun with Whoopie Goldberg giving the Xulians her version of Bush’s mind or how soldiers fighting in Iraq view him and Cindy Sheehan in the end gets a shot at Bush and there is even a Seinfeld episode in which Kramer explains to the Xulians how the war in Iraq may be ended. At the conclusion of the book, Bush takes on the universe. In all honesty, I am often confused how his mind functions. The other day he indicated opposition to a new bill that would give medical care to children on grounds it was the introductory step on the road to socialism. Or, opposing the Congressional proposal for a 3.5% compensate raise for soldiers on grounds it was “excessive.” He sees things in his own inimitable way and I thought possibly aliens could figure it out. I can’t.

Tyler: Do you have plans for future satires on American politics? Next year, if the Democrats are elected to office, do you think you will satirize them, disregarding of party lines?

Fred: As a satirist, there is no question I would love Giuliani or Ron Paul to get elected. In fact, right now I’m playing around with a title, “The Seven Faces of Rudy G.” Hillary would be fun to poke fun at because she so oftentimes acts severe and a bit pompous, but Barack Obama is tough because he has this fresh young face. I may never get straight whether it is Ron Paul or Paul Ron. I would struggle with John McCain because the man has suffered so much and been through a outstanding deal of pain, it would be cruel to go after him. Rudy reminds me of the wicked stepmother in Snow White who is always asking the mirror, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is fairest of them all.” Anyway, if one believes in satire then no one is exempt.

Tyler: Fred, thank you for joining me today. Before we go, please let our readers know where they may find out more data when it comes to “Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney in Hell.”

Fred: Currently there are three methods. You may go to Amazon.com, order it through your local Border’s Bookstore, or you may buy a copy directly from my political blog, http://www.TheImpudentObserver.com, where I will compensate shipping and personally autograph each single copy sent out.

Tyler: Thank you, Fred. I’m sure the book will become very standard with readers. I hope you have a bestseller on your hands.

This book was valuable in that it places the information in a coherent narrative. Sands lets his Interviewees speak for themselves and succeeds in not judging them personally, nor questioning their motives, but only points out where the International and US law may be used to judge them and their possible guilt. He interviews Jim Haynes, General Hill, Doug Feith, Diane Beaver, General Myers and others, devoting a chapter to each interview. The overall effect of these interviews is at times startling.

Sands focuses his main argument on the fact that lawyers were not guided by law in their memos and advice to the President, VP, Secretary of Defense, and others, but were subservient to the policy choices of our leaders. To use a phrase of Vice President Cheney, the Pentagon and Justice Department lawyers tried to write the law from the “dark side.” We the readers are the jury who will decide if they stayed within the bounds of the rule of law.

I think Sands does show, in disagreement with Alberto Gonzalez, General Myers, and Jim Haynes that the mistreatment of prisoners in Guantanamo was not in response to a request for guidance from below but was the premeditated, concerted effort of the lead Principals and Lawyers in the Bush Administration to bypass Army FM 34-52. The timeframe of the discussions, memos and interrogation policies of Guantanamo all support that conclusion. There can be no question of coincidental connections.

Phillipe Sands convincingly connects the dots in my opinion. President Bush and his advisors made two momentous decisions. First, they set aside the Geneva Conventions and second, they augmented FM 34-52 with 18 interrogation techniques used separately and in concert. These interrogations left Al-Qahanti, the first target of this new policy, in the words of one Army interrogator, with “eyes, black as coals.”

In his interview with Dr Abigail Seltzer, psychiatrist, and medical expert who has had extensive experience with torture survivors, we learn that deciding whether techniques are torture, a lot can be gleaned from the reaction of the victim. The interview, based on the actual interrogation logs of Mohammed Al-Qahtani, Detainee 063, is chilling, to say the least.

Critics may find that Sands spends too much time on Mohammed al-Qahtani Detainee 063 and exaggerates the importance of the treatment of one detainee, but I believe he shows how the part reveals the whole. Philippe Sands is very thorough in his analysis of detainee 063′s case. He speaks with lawyers and medical experts to determine whether the treatment of 063 crossed the line into torture. His concentration, primarily on one case, did not detract from his book but strengthened it in my opinion. Sands also makes the point that illegal activity in regards to violations of Geneva Art. 3 can be imputed to a defendant based on only one case.

In one interview with an International Judge and Prosecutor, Sands quotes them as saying the Administration Principals and lawyers’ attempt in the Military Commissions Act to immunize themselves from prosecution in the treatment of detainees before the passage of the Act was stupid and may come back to haunt them. In rejecting U.S. courts oversight of their cases they open themselves up to judgment by International Commissions and Courts. It could lead to a tap on the shoulder if the Principles visit other countries, much in the same way that Pinochet was arrested in Britain for crimes committed while he was the leader in Argentina.

Underlining the seriousness of this book and its charges, Sands quotes Justice Anthony Kennedy who wrote that acts against Geneva Art 3 are war crimes. The Supreme Court, in Hamdan vs Rumsfeld, overturned the President’s decision and OLC and Pentagon lawyers’ position that Geneva Conventions did not apply to Al Qaeda.

Critics are not going to like his drawing on the Nuremburg trials with inference that the US leaders and lawyers can be compared to Nazis. Sands is very careful to note that it is not his intention to make such a comparison, but only to use the legal principles derived from that era that are still applicable today. Mr. Sands does all this without swamping the average readers with a lot of legalese and jargon. Anyone with a patience and openness can follow his common sense approach.

Sadly this story is not over and much more is to come about meetings and involvement of top officials in the US government with torture. The Torture Team will provide an excellent bridge to future revelations and responses.

Postcript: On May 19th, Phillipe Sands revealed in the Manchester Guardian that the Pentagon has dropped all charges against Mohammed Al-Qahtani Detainee 063.

Postscrpt 2 Jan 14, 2009 “We tortured [Mohammed al-] Qahtani,” said Susan J. Crawford, in her first interview since being named convening authority of military commissions by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in February 2007. “His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that’s why I did not refer the case” for prosecution.

Crawford, a retired judge who served as general counsel for the Army during the Reagan administration and as Pentagon inspector general when Dick Cheney was secretary of defense, is the first senior Bush administration official responsible for reviewing practices at Guantanamo to publicly state that a detainee was tortured.

Sayer
This is not a wild diatribe about the misguided Bush administration or an ‘anti’ anything. It’s a well written and well documented account by an eminent British QC (Queens Council) of how Rumsfeld bent US and International law to allow interorgators to use torture in the prison camps in violation of the Geneva convention. It exposes part of the shame that Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld has brought on the great USA by invading Iraq.
Should be read by all loyal US citizens to make them aware of how important it is to use the voting booth in an enlightned way to ensure that an honorable and wise government is empowered.

In this new book he investigates how the US state introduced aggressive interrogation techniques at Guantanamo and elsewhere.

He interviewed key figures in the US Department of Defense, including Douglas Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Major General Michael Dunlavey, Commanding Officer of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo until 8 November 2002, General Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and General James Hill, Commander of US Southern Command.

Sands shows that the highest US authorities authorised criminal acts. As Abraham Lincoln said in 1863, “military necessity does not admit of cruelty … nor of torture to extract confessions.” Aggressive interrogation techniques, as well as being immoral, are unnecessary because they are unreliable, and they are also counter-productive because they discredit the user, undermine the user side’s war effort and increase the risks to the user side’s POWs. A National Defense Intelligence College study of 2006 concluded that there was almost no scientific evidence to support their use.

Yet in February 2002, President George W. Bush ruled that none of the Guantanamo detainees could rely on any of the protections granted by the Geneva Conventions. This ruling was intended to remove all constraints on interrogation, as Douglas Feith confirmed to Sands. On 2 December 2002 Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld signed an `Action Memo’ one of whose four attachments authorised the use of eighteen interrogation techniques. These all contravened US Army Field Manual 34-52, the rule book for military interrogation, and broke Common Article 3 of the Conventions, which prohibits cruel or inhumane treatment and `outrages upon personal dignity’, without exceptions for `necessity’ or national security.

Further, as former Defense Secretary James Schlesinger concluded in his report, “the augmented techniques for Guantanamo migrated to Afghanistan and Iraq where they were neither limited nor safeguarded.” US pressure also led British forces in Iraq to adopt more aggressive interrogation techniques, as Brigadier Ewan Duncan, responsible for British HUMINT operations, acknowledged to Sands.

In June 2006 the US Supreme Court ruled that Bush’s decision was unlawful and that Common Article 3 applied to all Guantanamo detainees. As Justice Anthony Kennedy said, “violations of Common Article 3 are considered `war crimes’.” All acts of torture and all acts of complicity or participation in torture are criminal offences.

8510 of 8667 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic device – pick your Kindle!
By FreeSpirit
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.

From the Inside Flap
“Those who still maintain that the subject of klezmer music and klezmorim is too slight to merit severe scholarly inquiry must take a good look at this fine collection of essays. This book debunks sure incorrect conceptions in regards to klezmer. One is the long-held faith that practitioners of klezmer were quaint but musical illiterates. The other is that this is an crusade to take a musical art form off the shelf to be preserved as a museum piece with little contemporary life of it is own. I am likewise delighted by those sectionalizations that deal with the Yiddish verbal expression of the klezmer idiom. Klezmer is not just an boulevard of sustaining cultural roots without the requisite of learning a language, as portions of this this book so well illustrate.”–Theodore Bikel, recording artisan and actor

About the Author
Mark Slobin is Professor of Music at Wesleyan University and author of various books on Jewish and Central European music, including Tenement Songs: Popular Music of the Jewish Immigrants (1992) and Exploring the Klezmer World (2000).

Klezmer, the Yiddish word for a folk instrumental musician, has come to mean a person, a style, and a scene. This musical subculture came to the United States with the late-nineteenth-century Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Although it had declined in popularity by the middle of the twentieth century, this lively music is now enjoying acknowledgement amongst music fans of all stripes. Today, klezmer flourishes in the United States and abroad in the world music and accompany Jewish celebrations. The outstanding essays assembled in this volume investigate American klezmer: it is roots, it is evolution, and it is spirited revitalization.
The subscribers to American Klezmer include each kind of authority on the subject–from academics to leading musicians–and they offer a wide range of perspectives on the musical, social, and cultural history of klezmer in American life. The basi half of this volume concentrates on the early history of klezmer, using folkloric sources, records of early musicians unions, and consultations with the last of the immigrant musicians. The second percentage of the collection examines the klezmer “revival” that begun in the 1970s. Several of these essays were written by the leaders of this movement, or draw on consultations with them, and give firsthand accounts of how klezmer is transmitted and how it is practitioners maintain a remainder amongst preservation and innovation.
