There are very few merchandise available today that are truly, unambiguously American. The automobiles that are made by American companies are constructed of steel from Korea and Poland and have engines that were engineered (and perhaps manufactured) in Japan. Even the merchandise that are in general thought of as being American are ofttimes not. One noteworthy exception to this trend is the Frye Company, maker of Frye boots, shoes and bags. Founded in 1863 by John Frye, it holds the distinction of being the longest without disturbance running shoe and boot manufacturer in the United States.

The unambiguously American nature of the Frye Company is even more interesting when a little is known with regards to the background of the company and the numerous types of clients that it has served. Both Union and Confederate soldiers wore Frye boots for the duration of the Civil War. Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders wore them for the duration of the Spanish-American War. Many pioneers depended on the durability of Frye boots for the long trek to the West. General Patton wore his Frye boots allround World War II.

The Frye Campus boot was reintroduced in the 1960′s. Modeled after the firstborn 1860′s design, it quickly became the boot of choice for galore who were swept up in the cultural revolution of that decade. Frye boots were merely the “in” things to have. As a matter of fact, there is a pair of Frye Campus boots on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. as share of a display of iconic productions of the 1960′s! The Frye Engineer boot is an eternal favored with clients from all backgrounds and styles.

So, those who go out and buy Frye shoes and boots these days may just be looking for a outstanding product that offers solid value. They may be happy to buy a real American product, made in America by Americans. Maybe they just love wearing shoes and boots that are well-made of the best materials available. But perhaps they are likewise very much enjoying the idea that there is a good bit of history and background in each single pair of Frye boots and shoes that are sold. Put a pair on and see if you feel it too.

5Kindle vs. Nook (updated 1/2/2011)
By Ron Cronovich
If you’re attempting to choose amongst a Nook and a Kindle, perchance I may help. My wife and I have owned a Nook (the basi one, not the new Nook Color), a Kindle 2, and a Kindle DX. When Amazon declared the Kindle 3 this summer, we pre-ordered two Kindle 3′s: the wi-fi only model in graphite, and the wi-fi + 3G model in white. They arrived in late August and we have employed them very steadily since then. For us, Kindle is better than Nook, but Nook is a good device with it is own vantages that I will talk about below. I’ll end this review with a few words with regards to the Nook Color.
