Observed each last Monday of the month of May is a federal holiday in the United States called as the Memorial Day. This holiday is celebrated to do not forget the departed American men and women who served the military service. This was basi enacted to honor the Union soldiers who defended the American flags for the duration of American Civil War and was later expanded after the World War I. It was formerly called as the Decoration Day. Memorial Day was initial observed at the Washington Race Course by the enslaved African-Americans from Charleston, South Carolina. Said race course (where Hampton Park is presently located) was employed in 1865 as a Confederate prison camp and the Union soldiers’ mass grave. After the hostilities ended, the enslaved African-Americans exhumed the bodies of the Union soldiers and gave them proper person graves; where they produced a fence surrounding the graveyard and placed an entry ranch. They called it the Union Graveyard. A Charleston local newspaper reported on May 1, 1865 that a crowd of around ten thousand humans primarily consist of African-Americans went to the Union Graveyard to celebrate the introductory ever Decoration Day with picnic, singing, and sermons. It is in Waterloo, New York where the firstborn official birthplace of Memorial Day is located. Said place was chosen because it was where Memorial Day was observed on May 5, 1866 and has become an annual event. It is believed that the friendship of General John Murray, who is a known Waterloo resident and General John A. Logan has helped so much in the growth of the Memorial Day. At present, a lot of Americans observed the Memorial Day by going to memorials and cemeteries. The national celebration happens at 3pm local time. The tradition of celebrating this holiday is made by flying the flag of the United States at half-staff starting at dawn until noon time. Volunteers for the holiday commonly placed the American flags on each grave website at the National Cemeteries. |
