Looking back on the year of 2010, there are a heap of media stories that are real standouts. It may be hard to do not forget what happened in a year, and what technically counted as last year’s news, which is why so numerous magazines, websites and newsprints like to compile lists for us. The world of late night television was turned upside down this year when Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno swapped shifts. When O’Brien left in a huge huff, Leno took over his spot and ratings suffered for all involved. Now, O’Brien is back on TBS (although fans may need cable or satellite TV to catch his show now) and running a successful late night comedy program. Looks like O’Brien is still having the last laugh with his huge settlement dollars and hot new show! Of course, the mere millions are not one thing next to what James Cameron earned off his sci-fi epic film “Avatar” that expended a good deal of weeks and months in theaters throughout the country this year. Another big seller? The iPad freed by Apple and Steve Jobs. Revolutionizing the way humans use mobile engineering seems to be all in a day’s work for Jobs who is behind the iPod, iPhone and now the iPad. Other top headlines in satellite TV news included the altering way the world works, like the move towards merger of television and internet. People are using the two more and more interchangeably each day, and the world is starting to take notice. It’s posing no difficulty and more legal to get a hold of media all the time, including tracks from the Beatles who have at last been freed on iTunes. Tying in the internet, television media and Steve Jobs, the Beatles had a record worthy firstborn week of sales online. Some celebrities personal lives made it on the list. When Sandra Bullock won an Oscar it was surely one of the highlights of a lifetime, followed by a very public divorce and cheating scandal which was surely one of her personal lows. A new marriage is in the works however, on the other side of the pond, where Prince William (one of the most swinging bachelors of all time) has decisive to tie the knot with Kate Middleton, a longtime girlfriend. Although more of a professional relationship, Larry King will be saying goodbye to his basi love, his satellite TV spot, this year with Piers Morgan coming in to take over. Over on Fox another successful Brit will be leaving as Simon Cowell bows out of “American Idol,” his brainchild and one of the most ordinary programs on TV. Finally, millions of fans had a bittersweet reaction to the end of the super-series “Lost,” the finale of which generated more questions than answers for a good deal of consecrated viewers.
